EE internships

I am a highly talented high school senior, who will be entering UDetroit-Mercy as a sophmore with a full scholarship. I have a 3.85 GPA and am an active leader in my community. I will be getting my master's degree in electrical engineering-specializing in computers within four years. I was wondering if anyone on the board has heard of any companies that offer very challenging and lucrative coop's and internships. By lucrative I mean they offer competitive pay, housing, transportation, and fun. All these are not requisite, but preferable. I know such places exist I just can't seem to find them.

Thanks for all you help.

come on, you are just a high school student. you don't know anything about EE yet. Plus, I don't think there is such thing

Yes, but I will be entering as a sophmore. So, next summer I will be a 2 year EE student, which if I'm not mistaken is when one would be getting a coop. As to whether or not they exist GM offers housing asistance for its interns, and Sun offers money for transportation.

Please, there has to be someone who has a friend who has had great coop. Not necissarily all inclusive, but just fun and rewarding. Thanks again.

Well, it doesn't really matter if you are an entering sophomore. That pretty much means nothing. You will have a VERY hard time finding an internship after your first or second year due to the ammount of exposure they give EEs. After junior year, however, you will be getting a lot of offers. Wait till then or at least wait until you get to your college.

My school has a mandatory coop, which begins after sophomore year. So, it is only preudent for me to begin my search.

Whether or not I can get the coop is irrelevant, I would appreciate it if you would please humor me. Maybe I'll start a new thread labeled, what are the best coops youve heard about, and never mention why I care.

daleardi, the AP credits and stuff will not help you. A decent EE internship will probably require some exposure to classes like: diff eqns, circuit analysis, elec-mag physics, digital logics etc and a good GPA in these classes. If you are at this level, you might have a good chance.

I will have taken "in college" calc 1,2,3, diff eq, elec-mag physics, digital logic. The only class you have mentioned that I will not have taken by next summer is curcuit analysis. Once again, lets not worry about if I'm capable of getting the coop, just assume Im a junior with a 4.0, ok?

once again thanks.

I was in Comp Sci and after my first year I was offered a job that pays $20/hour. Do good in your first year get a great GPA and you'll be fine.

daleardi- Work up your resume and a strong cover letter with the help of your academic advisor. Contact the local elec engineering association for your area, get names of the association's sponsor companies, pick the ones that you think you might like to coop with, come up with a proposal for a coop program and send it out. With things like this, it's a good idea to think outside the box and propose and idea that you'd like to see happen, and then do the work to make it happen.

Good luck! Anything is possible if you're willing to do the work. =)
