Hello,
I'm taking EECS 203 - Discrete Maths next semester. I was just wondering, how hard is the class? From some i heard it was fun and, from others, i heard it was a nightmare!
Any input appreciated, thanks! :)

I’m curious about this too. I’ll probably be taking it in the winter. It sounds very interesting and I’m a little bit excited :S.

It’ll be very very easy if you have experience in this area of math. It’s basically a big mish mash of topics. None of them are hard, but you do have to go through a lot of stuff. Most of what I’ve seen people get hung up on are simple small proofs.

The subject matter seems really hard at first, but gets easier once you get into the swing of things. There are a lot of proofs on both the tests and the homework, which can present a challenge for some people. If you put in the time and study hard, you’ll do fine.

When I took it, we had group homework due every week, which can be very time consuming. It’s easy to get stuck on the hard homework problems. The professors allowed us to work in groups of three, so make sure you find a smart group from the start.

You’ll see a lot of the material in EECS 281 as well, so it’s important to do well in 203.

Why are you taking 203? Are you a CS major?

I did not take 203, but I’ve heard it’s a nightmare. 281 is a breeze in comparison.

I’m a CS minor, so I took EECS 183, 203, 280, 281, and 484.

Did you take 203 and 280 concurrently? It’s what I’m doing, so I’m wondering how that is.

I didn’t take them concurrently - I actually took 280 before 203. Some of the stuff I learned in 203 would have helped in 280, though, so I would recommend taking 203 first, or taking it concurrently with 280 like you’re doing. Most CS majors take those classes concurrently. If you’re a CS minor, though, you might want to take them one-by-one depending on the difficulty and workload of your other classes.

i’m a CSE major…doing 280 and 203 next semester along with calc 4 and AAPTIS 402
i’ve never done 203 before…hope it isn’t as bad as people say it is :(

Liberate, so you are saying you don’t need to take 203 to take 281, even though the LSA course site says its a pre req?

CollegeFreak,

You’re going to want to take 203 before 281. It lays the foundation for future CS classes.

eh agreed somewhat, but not certainly necessary
