EECS Freshman Fall class schedule

Is this a good selection of classes?

Math 1A
CS 61A
EE 20N
A R&C requirement.

Is this selection good?

Or is it too technical heavy?

Should I replace EE20N with a humanities course?

The suggested schedule recommends a science course, but I know that Chem 1A, the only course I'm interested in currently, will probably be full.

I also don't have any AP/IB credits.

Well, I looked up EE 20N and it has math 1B as a prereq…

I’m gonna be a freshman too at Cal for EECS.

Btw, I’m planning on taking these courses:

Math 1B
CS 61A
Physics 7A
an R&C course

You can always take a Decal course or two also if you want…

EE 20N lists Math 1B as a prerequisite, and Math 53 and/or 54 (especially 54) is said to be helpful.

For the OP, you may want to replace EE 20N with either a science course or a breadth (humanities or social studies) course in your proposed schedule, since you won’t have completed Math 1B for EE 20N.

The problem with taking a science course is that most courses which satisfy the minimum 11 unit requirement have pre-reqs which I haven’t completed yet, or will probably be full by the time I get to choose them, since I’m not attending CalSO (International Student).

Maybe Chem 1A won’t be full and I can take that.

Include some humanities and social studies courses that fulfill the College of Engineering breadth requirements in your course candidate list, so that you have options in case your first choices are full.

http://coe.berkeley.edu/students/current-undergraduates/requirements/hss-humanities-current-list/HSS%20NEW%20REQ.pdf

Instead of EE20N you could do Physics.

I did Math 53, Physics 7A, CS61A, and a R&C class my first semester and it was alright and I did well, so I’m think your course load is definitely manageable, but I would recommend pushing off EE20N for at least another semester or two since you should get used to Berkeley math first before taking that class.

Can’t do Physics 7A as I don’t have the Math requirements done :-(

Thanks everyone for the help anyways.

If I were you, I’d just do a 12-unit schedule. It is light, but you’ll have plenty of time to get acclimated considering it’s your first semester.

You didn’t take any calculus at all in high school? You need only a TINY amount of calculus to be ready for Physics 7A (they don’t check prereqs).

^yeah exactly. In fact in a lot of the item the questions are just created to test your quantitative understanding of the physics concept you were thought, not a plug and chug can you do calculus question like acceleration is exp(2t), what is velocity.

A lot of the answers to the questions you’ll get will be clever geometric or algebraic solutions. Although there might be some conceptual calculus applications so you might just want to read your calc book a little bit this summer to get a head start.

Wait… I can take Physics 7A without Math 1A and 1B?

I’ve studied Calc probably more advanced than any AP course, so Physics Calc probably wont be a problem

Even the physics course itself shouldn’t be a problem as I studied it two years ago.
I was just worried about the requirements.

At Berkeley nobody cares about prerequisites, especially for massive lower div classes. You should take Physics 7A.
