EECS/MATSCI Double Major

Exactly how rigorous is it to pursue this double major? I'm an incoming freshman... yeah

Ummm…why don’t you get a semester under your belt before you start thinking about stuff like that. See how things go. ;-)

i concur .

I think there is a special program for EECS + materials science. I think the main thing is that you’ll have considerably less flexibility if you take this track, because just taking all your required courses will take up half the time. Frankly, I’d just do whatever frees you up to do whatever you want. You can always take the MAT-SCI courses you need. If you end up doing enough to do both majors, then sure, pick it up along the way.

Else, you can make your own program – put some MAT-SCI in there, maybe take a math class or two beyond what you need to, or physics, or chemistry – lots of interesting stuff out there.

@mathboy98: could you elaborate on making your own program? is it possible to do so within the college of engineering (like, make your own engineering major)?

Yea, I would also highly recommend that you actually take a semester first before double majoring. It is possible, but it’s going to be hard, very hard. EECS is already the hardest major at Cal, and doubling it with another science major is going to be a suicide (if you want to graduate in 4 years that is).
Each major itself is very difficult and time consuming. If they even allow you to do both, you would probably be cheating yourself out of not only a half-decent social life, but also you would also be cheating yourself out of a proper education because you would be limiting it to classes and not extra-curricular activities, research, or internships.
