I took the January SAT I test and scored 1540...470 math, 540 writing, 530 reading, and 9 essay. Yes, these are bad scores, but I want to improve. I have discipline and will study hard, but I would like to know "how" much I can expect to improve...I am taking a SAT prep class which uses the Blue Collegeboard SAT prep book. I am planning on taking the March test, and June test. Any feedback is appreciated....p.s, I am thinking of applying to UCLA, but what SAT score would I need for UCLA?

you'll need to have about a 2000 to get really into the running for UCLA

^ Not true. Go to http://apps.collegeboard.com/search/CollegeDetail.jsp?collegeId=992&profileId=6 and look at their middle fifty percent of SAT scores.

In fact, pmcharkins is off by about 250 points. Clearly, 25 percent of the kids that got into UCLA had below a 1170 (M+CR, out of 1600), so you really just need to up your math/reading score by about 100 each and then you'll be in the middle fifty percent.

What class are you taking?

It's certainly possible to raise your score by several hundred points, especially since you have stated that you're willing to work hard and are determined.

I know quite a few brilliant people in my school who had PSAT scores of the same magnitude as your SAT score (150s) eventually go on to get in the 1800-1900 range on the SAT.

Yes I think it's possible if you practice enough. I went from a 1740 to 2000 after a bunch of studying.
