Eep-- help

Okay, so back in early January, I sent some things to all my colleges-- a letter containing some important corrections and an additional essay to a select few. My parents gave me the envelopes and I put the stamp on them and away they went.

Well, just yesterday they decided to tell me that when they went to the post office, the guy said it wasn't enough postage, but apparently the letters were already sent (i wasn't too clear on what happened). This was around three weeks ago. And all the letters went out. And they haven't come back.

In this case, my dad says that the admissions office will be charged with the postage. I'm so mad that my parents didn't tell me until yesterday, and it's too late to do anything about it. Are the admissions offices going to be uber annoyed at me for not knowing the right postage? It wasn't anything intended, it just turned out it wasn't enough...my parents should have known but they're sort of bumbling when it comes to college admissions.

So I guess I'm asking...what should I do now? What if they chose not to accept the letters? Will they come back to me? And what will they think if they did end up paying the extra 20 cents when they got the letters?

eep...freaking out...please respond. thanks.

I doubt it will go into your file. try and breathe.

not to worry, bb. In many cases, the PO doesn't even try to collect the extra postage bcos its not worth their time, effort, and the associated paperwork.

Good luck on the apps.

Babybird, you need some new karma! If it isn't one thing, it's another.

Good luck. The colleges will make their decisions on your overall application. I have never heard of missing postage being a factor in a college's decision. Grades, scores, what your teachers say about you, what you wrote in your essays--you as a person, as complete a picture as they can get on paper--that is what they want.

Don't worry about it, and don't write to apologize :). As I recall, you've been there, done that!

I would worry more about whether the material has been delivered/received--call and confirm. Probably the insufficient postage was not a big deal but it is also conceivable that the material is sitting in the post office in your town or near the college--the fact that it did not come back to you does not mean it got where it was supposed to and it may be in some sort of postage-due limbo.

patient-- I know! what is with me? (it's called being the oldest child and having clueless parents, lol)

Thanks for the responses, everyone. Mattmom-- you would suggest calling them and asking if they got the envelopes? what if they don't remember?

Babybird, look at it this way: IF a college held something so insignificant as this against you, would you want to be at such a place? You probably already know some places are known as red tape havens. Maybe this is a way to find them...

As others have said, it is much better to just f/u to make sure the schools have received all the needed materials. Most schools will have some means of doing so, usually starting about now.

And, don't worry if they did not get something. Happens all the time - usually because the school misfiled. They take late stuff if there's any doubt.

So, don't panic. It will be long enough wait until April, anyway.

If you tell them specifically what was sent, they should be able to confirm that it is in your file. Good luck.
