Efc = 0?

In fafsa, I was given the choice of putting or not putting my parents' info. I chose not to because it already considered me as an independent student. I answered all the other questions correctly (HONESTLY!

Now, my EFC is 0 and I also have to verify my independent status. Did I do anything wrong? Why did they even consider me as an independent student?!

how old r u?

19 10charrrrrrrrrr

You had to have answered something indicating you were independent. … At risk for homelessness, foster youth, married …ect

None of them seriously. Except this: As determined by a court in your state of legal residence, are you or were you in legal guardianship? YES.

No of people in household = 1 (they only want me to put the ones that financially depend on me)

I think it’s because of that legal guardianship thing. I thought it meant something about if I’m still under guardianship of someone. I put yes but it should have been no.

You said that you are an independent but you aren’t? Under the financial aid stuff for California, you aren’t really considered truly independent until you are 24, as far as I know. So even though you might file taxes independently, you are still dependent according to fafsa.
However, if you are truly independent and get absolutely no aid from your family and have special circumstances, you have to verify that, in whatever form they request. It is because of your age.

doesn’t sound right . To be independent you must be

You are enrolled in a Masters program, Doctorate Degree, or graduate Certification program-nope

You have a child or children that are your legal dependent(s)-don’t think so

you may have a family member etc. that is considered your dependent…he/she does not necessarily have to be a child - didn’t sound like it from what you said

You are married-nope

You are under the age of 24 and both of your parents are deceased-nope

You were a ward of your state until you were 18 years of age-nope

You are 24 years of age or older-nope

You are a Veteran of the United States Armed Force-nope

You were a foster child after the age of 13.-don’t think so

You are an emancipated child as determined by a court judge.-don’t think so

You are homeless or at risk of homelessness as determined by the director of a HUD approved homeless shelter, transitional program, or high school liaison.-nope

The one you filled out must have been the one where you were emancipated child as determined by a court judge clause- i think you may have made a mistake there if you weren’t

^
As determined by a court in your state of legal residence, are you or were you in legal guardianship? YES.

Im not under legal guardianship. I thought it was a term that refers to people dependent on their guardian (in my case, my mom)

anyway I changed it and now I’m a dependent student.
