Oh and the Americorps has education awards:[AmeriCorps.gov > Segal AmeriCorps Education Award](http://www.americorps.gov/for_individuals/benefits/benefits_ed_award.asp)

Question about an independent college, in this case, Nova Southeastern in Florida. Does independent mean they are a for profit? Their tuition is 21.6K, but give an average non-need based aid of 5.6K, so that would bring it down to 16K + 9K R&B. That’s not a lot higher than many schools, but average debt out is 36K which is much higher than Miami U(Oford,OH) or even Miami of Florida(24k). Can someone give me the scoop on the independents? Are they all the same?

I read my daughter actually might be able to get into University of Miami,Fl but only as a MAYBE. If you were a MAYBE and they accepted you, would their FA be anything? Or would it be like we let you in but you better have a rich uncle who can pay?

If D2 should get a full scholarship to Shawnee State here in Ohio, we would only have to pay R&B of 8.4K. Our EFC for her would be 7.5K. Would D2 still be able to get the subbed(3500) and unsubsidized(2000) loans from the Government plus could she take out any more loans from Govt at higher rates?

She may be offered subsidized Stafford loans if it’s calculated during the FA award process that she has financial need…otherwise she will be offered unsubsidized loans. There are no other student loans from the government that an undergrad can take other than Perkins loans, but those are campus-based, generally offered in small increments and might require a very low EFC. You could take a Parent Plus loan from the government at a higher rate…but the loan would be in your name, not your D’s.

Just because a school says the “average” merit scholarship is $5.6k, that does NOT mean that your D would get that much. She might get less, she might get more, she might get NONE. Much will depend of your D’s stats for the school.

“Average” means nothing. 20 students might get $1000 merit scholarship, 20 other students might get $10k, 100 students may get NOTHING…but the “average” merit scholarship would be $5k. Yet no student received that particular amount…and the majority received NOTHING.

The COA for the school is more than just tuition, room and board. COA includes books, transportation, and perhaps personal expenses. Does the school have any course fees or any other fees?

Your D will be able to borrow $5500 (don’t know if most/all will be unsub or not). However, if your concern is that you can’t afford your EFC, then you can tell your D that you need her to work as much as she can during the summer and perhaps part-time during the school year to pay for books, various other school costs, and personal expenses.
