EFC and Twins

Just out of curiousity: Does anyone know how your EFC is affected if you are a twin and both are going to college? The online calculator estimated our EFC at around $14,000 for just one of us.

the EFC is divided by however many are going to college. When you filled out the FA calculator, did you indicate that there were 2 in college full-time? If you did and your EFC came up as 14,000 -- that is the amount your family will be expected to contribute for each child.

remember that EFC will change somewhat for each twin, depending on assets and earnings that the student has.

i think the question that the calculator thing asked was if we had any already in college, so we put none. so that would mean that it would be around $7,000 each?

go back to the beginning and use this calculator. Figure both the federal methodology and institutional methodology types (the amounts are usually different and may impact what schools you apply to).

When it asks for number in family -- put in the number of people in your family (including yourself and twin). When it asks for number in college, put in 2.

see what EFC you get that way.

ok, got it. it came up with
IM: 7,100
FM: 8,316
so my twin's would be about the same amount then, give or take depending on savings.
Thank you very much.

you got it!

do keep in mind that colleges can gap you (in other words, they will not award you enough to cover everything except the EFC) and that each college can recalculate your figures to come up with their own EFC -- but you have a pretty good idea of what it will cost you family.

now you need to make your college list -- pay attention to schools that meet 100% financial need (don't gap!) and don't expect students to take out too much in loans. Also see if there is any school you are interested in with institutional merit scholarships.

finally -- make sure you and your twin have a safety school that you can afford!

Thanks again for all of your help! That question has been on my mind for quite some time now. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer it.
