It says that my FAFSA form has been selected for "verification." (I'm guessing because it's at $0. What does taht mean- do I have to submit any kind of materials to anywher?

I got that too. I am not sure but i think that means if any of your schools ask you for any of your forms you will have to give it to them. Again, I am not sure but i am sure someone else here knows. I got an EFC of 1400

Colleges are required by the federal government to verify the information given on the FAFSA for consistency. Most schools ask for the W-2s and verification of information from the student and their family as standard practice. If the college needs additional information to complete the verification process they will contact you.

Most people with low EFC have that verification asterisk

My EFC was low. But I did not have the asterisk. What does that mean?

Nothing, because the school could ask for verification.

Usually the school will ask for:
A} Parent's tax return & W2s
B} Student's tax return & W2s
C} Fill out and return a school specific verification worksheet, restating some of your FAFSA answers (like the worksheets)
