What is the efc for a foster child without a job?

Usually 0. And, usually a household of one.

A foster child is independent for financial aid purposes. The foster parents’ income is not considered.

I once tutored someone for a couple of months and last school year i worked for my school’s basketball team but that money is long gone(i didn’t even put it in the bank), do i have to count that?

If you earned a small amount of money, you have to declare it, but it won’t matter at all. You can earn up to about $5k per year and it won’t affect your EFC…since the money isn’t sitting in a bank.

IF the tutoring job was cash, it may cause more problems to list it, so don’t list that. It’s not going to make ANY difference EFC-wise so it’s not like you’re trying to pull something.

both the tutoring aqnd basketball thing were cash. I earned about 100 from each

It’s nothing. …it’s not going to make a difference. It’s not enough to affect EFC.

But i still have to list it?

Some here will say that you have to be perfectly honest and list it. I would probably say since we’re talking about a total of $200 cash and it will have NO EFFECT on your EFC that you can skip it.

Some people are real sticklers and insist that kids list things like Bday checks from Granny for $50.

I agree with mom2collegekids. It’s only $200 and won’t affect anything and will keep you honest. I believe you list it as untaxed income. Think of the kind of person you are and want to be and do what you think is right. On your college apps you might be listing you had a job and this will reflect on your FAFSA. Even back in the dark ages (1970s), I was a foster child and got a lot of aid for school.

Print off and keep a copy of any taxes/FAFSA s or other forms you fill out. Chances are you will fill them out again next year and a year is just long enough to forget a lot of things. The first year is the hardest and it gets clearer after that.

Hang in there.

Thanks guys so much. I’ll put 200 under untaxed income, and put zeros everywhere else lol. Since I am a foster kid and therefore an inependent, the information i put on my fafsa includes eveything since freshman year?

*Since I am a foster kid and therefore an inependent, the information i put on my fafsa includes eveything since freshman year? *

You only put in money info about the year 2010. From Jan 1, 2010…to …Dec 31, 2010

If you got that 200 in 2011, you don’t mention. It sounds like $100 was earned in 2010, and $100 was earned in 2011. You only mention the $100 in 2010.

You have no other income. The money paid to your foster parents is not your income.

the first 100 was definitely in 2010 whereas the second 100 was sometime in January I’m pretty sure. Though I’ll have to check to make sure. Thanks again for your help. And since my efc is zero that means i go to college totally for free? sorry for my questions it’s just that no one has really talked to me about it

*And since my efc is zero that means i go to college totally for free? *

No.

The words “expected family contribution” is a misnomer. That’s not what it means and needs to be changed to a phrase that is more appropriate.

FAFSA EFC is just for federal aid…which isn’t much. You’ll get a $5550 federal grant and a $5500 student loan.

However, depending on what state you’re in, you may also get some state aid.

And, if your stats are strong enough, and you get accepted to some of the schools that can afford to give lots of aid, then you could get more money.

What state are you in?

What are your stats? GPA and test scores?

And, where will you be applying?

i live in california.
my list thus far:
UC Berkeley
UC Irvine
USC
Santa Clara
Spelman
Stanford
CSU Long Beach
however my list is ever-changing as I have been doing a lot of research lately
my stats are not, at least by CC standards, spectacular but here they are:
SAT 1990
M: 600 CR: 660 W: 730
ACT: 30
Unweighted: 4.0
weighted: 4.25-4.3? I’m not sure yet, though I know it rose after this last semester.
I’m also an URM
What I lack in tests I think I’ll be able to make up for with my essays because I feel that I have a story to be told
