The IRS website has a free efile option. You can choose from online software providers and they will walk you through your taxes then you can file online.

If you feel very uncomfortable doing it yourself then there are a couple of volunteer organizations that will help you do your taxes. Check with your local United Way and also your local library.

Does that mean that there is an error of some sort? My mom filled it out for me last semester and accidentally forgot to subtract debt from their investments so it said we had a lot of money to put forth... but this time we made sure to subtract it out and we have 10k in investments and my parents have a fairly low income... and my dad's business is not worth anything (it's completely labor/service) and there isn't a whole lot of work for him right now so he's classified as a "displaced worker".

Is it possible that I made an error or would that be an actual calculation that should be qualifying me for grants and work study?

Are the debts directly against the investments? Such as a margin account loan against stocks or a mortgage against a 2nd home. Only debts against reportable assets can be used to reduce investment values in FAFSA. No other unsecured debt such as credit cards etc can be reported on FAFSA. If they are those sort of debts then you have reported them correctly.

If everything else is correctly reported then hopefully the EFC is correct. The * means it is flagged for verification so be prepared to provide supporting documentation (tax returns etc) if the school requests it.
