EFC is 0 and UT expects me to pay full price

This is ridiculous. Full price? Bhp and plan ii sounds great but there's no way I can afford that. Is anyone on cc in the same situation as me?

I did some research on some other posts that you put up about UT. If I read your messages correctly, you missed the deadline to enroll at UT and probably lost any financial aid packages they had put together for you. I would contact Financial Aid and talk to them about it–UT isn’t expecting anything unreasonable. They probably had offers for you, but since you didn’t enroll, that money went to another student in need who did enroll.

Well they waved my deposit after I was reinstated. My financial aid looks exactly the same before I turned down their offer.

So you are saying you received no offers for financial aid? No pell grants, loans, etc?

I am a little confused by your posts.

In another post you stated:

“Now for UT. If I go to UT, I would collectively have 24k of debt upon graduation.”

That sounds like you got some FA form UT and they are nor covering around 6k a year.

For this year and after all the ongoing budget cuts all around Texas, UT is struggling to offer FA at all since Federal and State resources are being cut seriously. So what UT is doing is trying to cover whatever they can with University funds and waiting to see if they are going to get any from state and federal sources. And they are offering loans to cover the portion they can not cover otherwise and you seem to be of the lucky ones to got aid at all.
UT is not promising anything but they said that if funds are available at a later time they would be disbursed to those who need them more, so there is that little hope that you may not need to borrow as much.
I another note I would suggest that you try to cut your expenses in the living costs. They calculate you COA on UT dorms costs, but if you live outside campus you can save some $. My D is living at CollegeHouses (coop) and she saves around 2.5k a year.
So don’t be discouraged, UT is a great school and is definitely worth the 24k of debt, but maybe if things get better, you’ll receive more aid in the future and if you spend wisely, you’ll incur in less debt.
Good luck!

I incorrectly read my financial aid so it’s going to be more around 80k in debt. That’s after the Pell Grant and not counting govt loans

With an EFC of 0 your pell should be 2500 or so a semester. Are you a Texas resident? If you are and the legislature gets its act together and frees up some money, you should qualify for the Texas grant which is around 7k per year, but even with that, turning down SMU under the full ride you speak about would be foolish. 24K? Maybe…but when you are pushing 6 figures, that number is staggering.

Oh, I see…well, have you tried talking to your FA counselor?

By now there should be a lot of people as my D2 who declined their FA (Merit Scholarship worth 20k in 4 years and UT freshman scholarship worth 7k for freshman year only) so the university should may have some funds to relocate, so this may be the best moment for you to try and get some of those funds. The FA people is usually very helpful, it is better if you can reach your counselor directly, but it is sometimes very difficult. In your case, since you have another offer and were admitted to 2 of the most difficult programs to get in, I guess the university will really want for you to stay, so I would definitely give it a try. The best approach would be to make an appointment and go talk in person with your counselor if that is possible for you. If you can’t go personally then call them asap.
There is nothing to loose!

I called the office of financial aid today. Just got some random guy. How do you figure out who your financial aid officer is?

lightseeker, any more details on that process? How in the world do you find your FA counselor?

You call the OSFS and tell the person who answers you that you want to talk to your assigned counselor, they may tell you that he/she is not available right now, then you ask for his/her name and email and ask to make an appointment with him/her.

If that does not work I will suggest sending an email to the director of financial aid services explaining how you have been not able to speak with your assigned counselor, but I will leave that as a last resource …

Remember to always keep the tone of the conversations as a plead and not as a demand…“in the asking is the giving”.
