EFC is $35K. Do I have any chance of getting help?

@mom2collegekids: Nationally recognized success for business, and football are two of my main requirements. I also want a good college town. I see that you know a lot about the University of Alabama. I just submitted my application literally two minutes ago. My best sitting ACT score is 29. I know that I qualify for a partial out of state scholarship, as well as Honors College admission. Is there any way that I could get more scholarship money than is already advertised?

Thanks,

Hey! :)

When you applied, did you put Business as your major?

The Business School [The Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration](http://www.cba.ua.edu/) does give additional scholarships that stack on top of university scholarships. Hopefully, you’ll get one! I think you’d be a good candidate because you’re OOS. From the b-school website: The priority deadline for all C&BA scholarship applications from high school seniors and new transfer students is December 1 of each year.

If you get a chance to tour Alabama, you’ll be impressed by the b-school, the Business Library and the facilities  Here’s info for the Angelo Bruno Business Library [Angelo Bruno Business Library and Bashinsky Computer Center - The University of Alabama](<a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama)

In a few days, you’ll get an email with log on info for MyBama. That will let you apply for scholarships - be sure to list your major. You must do the scholarship app ASAP.

The Honors College is awesome. You do have to wait until after you’re accepted to apply to the Honors College, but be sure to do so as soon as you can. I need to find out if they have scholarships, too. :)

Would you have any opportunities to visit? You will get an invite to Capstone Honors Day in Jan. It’s usually held on MLK weekend.

:) If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me … :)

** An out-of-state student who goes to UA recently posted on CC that… “UA is recruiting for the best and brightest students nationwide. For many students, it is the money that first interests us in Alabama, we visit, and then we get hooked.” **

BTW…

Have your parents indicated how much they can pay towards your college?

at LSU, with a 29 from a single sitting you will get instate tuition and fees which are around 5k (well it takes a 28). With a 30, you will get FREE tuition. So apply to LSU, retake ACT, try for a 30, and you won’t pay a cent for tuition (a 1330/1600 SAT also gets you free tuition). And even if you can’t get a 30, it’s still really cheap. I am also “from” Texas (moved to NM tho right before I started high school) and I am looking at LSU because LOTS of Texans go there and it’s cheap and its a good school with great football (2007 NATIONAL Championship, and they have the 2009 National Baseball championship). I am taking a tour Wednesday morning (I have never been to La) and I am excited, :D.

Thanks everyone for the responses. My main goal is to eventually get an MBA at an elite school and work on Wall Street. Will going to a less competitive school hurt my chances of getting accepted to an elite MBA school?

Your GMAT scores will be a critical factor.

Here’s what I would recommend you do. Pick 3 or 4 schools you would like to consider for your MBA. Call the admissions reps at those MBA programs and ask them what they would be looking for. Tell them about the schools you are considering and see what they think. Ask about what kind of GMAT scores they would be looking for.

Just one other thought. I went on to get my masters degrees (including an MBA) directly from undergrad. I wish I had gone and got some real world experience first. I quickly appreciated those I was in class with who had more context of what we were studying.

Which area of business are you interested? That can also make a difference. If you want to work on Wall Street, does that mean that you’re interested in Finance or Econ/Math or what? :)

I remembered reading this post by a UA student on this thread, so it might be of use… * " [if you] major in Econ/Math, remember that economics is a major in both the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) and the Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration (CBA). While both are similar in their requirements and share the economics department, I recommend choosing CBA because it is more used to these kinds of majors (and grants a finance major for something like 9 more credits)." *
