EFC of $32804 ...How does that work?

My attendance (estimated) to attend Penn State is $48,884 and my family’s EFC is what is stated above. I got the $5,500 loan, but is that all I am going to get? Or, am I going to get more? I’m confused… any help would be appreciated!

Is that number a FAFSA EFC or a Penn State EFC?

@middkid86 Penn State

Well, it sounds like Penn State is expecting you to pay at least $32,804 per year. As to whether or not you’ll get anything more than a $5,500 loan, what did the financial aid offer from Penn State say? If all they offered was the loan, than it looks like that’s all you’re going to get, which would mean that you’ve been “gapped” to the tune of $10,580.

Cost of Attendance $48,884 - EFC $32,804 = Need of $16,080

Need of $16,080 - Loan $5,500 = Gap of $10,580

what did FAFSA say that your EFC is??

You are OOS, right?

Ok…I misread…Your FAFSA EFC is $32,800 and PSU costs nearly $50k.

Seriously, once your EFC is beyond about $6k, you’re not going to see much/any “free money” from PSU. You’re OOS. Your parents don’t pay taxes there. PSU charges OOS for a reason. They don’t charge it just so that they then have to give students the money to pay the OOS costs.

How much will your parents pay each year?

What are your affordable schools?

OP said that $32,804 was the Penn State EFC.

^Penn State is a FAFSA only school, so FAFSA EFC should be equal to Penn State EFC. Penn State is notorious for poor merit and need-based aid, even for instate students, and gaps heavily for most students.

@MiddKid86‌

the OP is confusing.

She says that her family’s EFC is in the title.

PSU doesn’t give it’s own EFC…it’s a FAFSA only school. If anything, if PSU “gave” an EFC, then it would be the $42k that PSU expects the family to pay…right???
