EFC question

I used NPC on YALE web site and its giving me an EFC of ~9k, my EFC from FAFSA is ~18k.
Which EFC # will Yale look at their own or FAFSA. I also send them CSS form too.

Yale NPC did ask for personal property like primary home and I did put the value and the mortgage amount due.

I would assume Yale’s NPC is more accurate, as it asks for more detailed information than the FAFSA.

FAFSA is only for Federal funds, the Y calculator includes both Federal and Institutional monies. Since Y is a very well endowed school, many people who don’t qualify for Federal aid do receive grants & WS from Y even though they include more information, like home equity, in their calculations.

For instance, we have never qualified for Federal funds, but have received Institutional FA from Y and another private college.

The same situation entomom describes applies to us. The EFC calculated by the Yale NPC turned out to be very accurate.

Thanks folks, so I can safely assume that EFC calculated by Y NPC is more accurate and the Final FA numbers will be closer to Y EFC and not FAFSA EFC.

Not sure how CSS profile plays into this since CSS ask lot of info also and its more info then Y NPC ask. I am sure Y looks at CSS very closely…

Does Yale ask for the CSS Profile? Is it’s own fin aid form just extra questions?

With an EFC over PELL eligibility, the only guaranteed aid your student will get from the federal government are the subsidized loans, though Yale may use other federal money such as SEOG and workstudy to fund the package, Since Yale does give a no loan package, your son will be eligible for subsidies on most of the Student Direct loan that he will be able to take that can take up the slack between the Yale and federal EFCs.

@dadfor2014: I think you can safely assume that what you would pay Yale would be more in-line with their NPC, rather than the FAFSA.

That said, Yale does look very closely at the CSS Profile and some of those questions are not covered by their NPC. For example, Yale’s CSS profile specifically asks if you own real estate other than your home, the number of properties, their total value and their purchase price. It also asks for the number of cars you own, along with the year, make and model, any non-retirement annuities, the value of 401k accounts, trusts, etc. Depending on your specifics, that could reduce the amount of financial aid your child receives.

Once Y sends the FA package does that pkg also mention about direct loans to cover the slack or its the Students responsibility to contact Federal govt to secure those Loans (Stafford, Subsidize and unsubsidized)…

My son was accepted several years ago SCEA. I can’t remember if the estimated award he received in December contained an application for a Parent Federal Direct PLUS Loan, but the final award in May/June did contain an application. Information about loans are available on line: [Yale University Financial Aid > All About Education Loans](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)

cpt, Y uses the Profile and asks an additional question about your cars (at least they did a few years ago).

When does RD applicants start getting notification for Y FA numbers, after admission decision or before. ??

If you have submitted the FAFSA and the CSS Profile by the required deadlines, your child will receive their financial aid award with their letter of acceptance on/or about April 1st.

@gibby - Thanks

Thats what I thought too, they both should come same time.
