EFC Score on Fafsa Wrong?

Hello, I filed the Fafsa but i believe my EFC score is wrong. I’m a high school senior. I filed under only my mother, who makes about 45k a year. I do not make any income myself. I have two siblings so a family of four in total. The student report says that my EFC score is 019830 and I’m not eligible for any federal grants. Help?

Why do you think the number is incorrect?

Does your family have any assets? Money in the bank, real estate, etc?

It sounds like your parents are not married? Does your dad pay child support? what about spousal support? Does your mom receive any?

Print out your FAFSA and go line by line to make sure no entry errors were made.

is your other self employed or a business owner?

I think I figured it out. I reviewed my student aid report and saw that the information for my mothers tax return was also put for my own, so it says that I as a student made 45k, exactly as much as my mother although I hadn’t. Using the collegeboard calculator I saw that this error turned my would be EFC score of about 1900~ to the 19830 that it is. Could I still make a correction? and if so by fixing it so late have I missed out on any grants?

If the FAFSA EFC is “incorrect,” it’s because incorrect information was provided when the form was completed. The EFC is calculated using a set formula. Garbage in, garbage out.

Yes, you can still make a correction. Did your mom try to use the IRS data retrieval tool in the FAFSA? It would prefill info from the 2015 tax return.

Yes…go into your FAFSA and make the correction. While younare at it…link your mom’S info using the IRS Data Retrieval tool.

If you filed 2015 taxes, you can use it too for your portion.

Common mistake. Change the info regarding the student.

Alright, thanks everyone. Will be making the changes!
