EFC- the shock of my life

It did seem ironic to me that had you could have 2 different families, making about the same amount of money. One buys a modest home and lives frugally so that they can save money for their kids' education. The other family lives the high life, renting a snazzy apartment uptown, buying a new car every year, wearing designer clothes....and not saving a dime. At FAFSA time, it just seems ironic that the 1st family (who does what they are "supposed" to) comes out with a much higher EFC than the 2nd family.
