EFC with more than 1 child in college

I did the FAFSA for my 2 kids in college and each one came back with an EFC of $46,000.00. Does that mean my EFC is 46,000.00 per child, or do I divide it between the 2 college kids—in other words 23k per child? I would appreciate a definitive answer.

Thank you.

Per child.

Unfortunately, that means they EACH have an EFC of $46,000.

Make sure you correctly noted that you will have 2 in college in the FAFSA form - important.

It’s not always split 50-50 when you have two. It could each be 60% of what would have been total for one child.

The FAFSA EFC is usually about 50/50 @brantly

The family contribution at Profile Schools is typically 60/60 at schools that both meet full need.

To @Ctdoctor did you indicate on both FAFSA forms that you would have two kids in college?

When you only had one kid in college…what was your EFC (or are these twins starting together)?

To have a total EFC of $92,000, your income would need to be north of $250,000 a year or more…and/or you have significant assets. Is this the case?

A $46,000 EFC would indicate a family income in the $150,000 or so range.

But assets could weigh heavily, things like real estate in addition to your primary residence, 529 accounts for both kids, etc.

ETA…did you do a tax deferred retirement rollover in 2017??

Your EFC total for both kids is $96k. But really, it’s likely higher. If your kids attend a school that doesn’t meet need, you’ll be expected to pay all costs.

If your kids attend a school that uses CSS Profile, your expected contribution total for both could be well over $100k.

What year are your kids?

If you don’t want to pay that much, look for schools that will give them large merit scholarships.

Did the acceptance come with any merit???

It appears that you have an older child who graduated from college. What was his EFC while in school?

With a total EFC of $100k, that suggests that your income is $300k

Can you afford the cost of attendance at this college?
