EFC

If my EFC is $42,000 and I want to attend University of Miami (about $60,000)
And I have 4,000 total florida scholarships, does that mean the highest scholarship i can get it $14,000?
Although my efc is 42k, they def wont give that much

University of Miami does NOT guarantee to meet full need for all, accepted students. Your efc should be viewed as the MINIMUM you will be paying. In addition to any scholarship, you would also be eligible for a $5500 Direct Loan for your freshman year.

I know, but because of my EFC, is the maximum scholarship i can receive only $14,000?

Are you talking about MERIT aid? If so, you can get a merit scholarship that is more.

Yeah, academic. My SAT is a 1360 with a UW GPA of 3.64. Any idea on what kind of merit scholarship i would get? I really need like atleast 14k to go

You can get all the merit aid and grants you can, either from U Miami, the state, outside scholarships. You can get, for example, a merit award from the school, FRAG $2500, Bright Futures $2300-3100,. You could get local Rotary scholarship, military benefits, etc.

What you probably won’t get is any need based aid. You can take out the student Stafford loans, and if needed your parents might get Parent Plus loans.

You’d more likely be given $5500 in loans and maybe some work study.

When you add the FL merit, and the $5500 student loan, and a $2k work study award…that almost meets need.

Mom2…the student is inquiring about MERIT awards. Those can be awarded in any amount irrespective of EFC.

^^^
I know that he used the word “scholarship” but I thought he meant to write grant since he was talking in context of EFC and COA.

Yes, if he’s talking about merit awards then he’s not limited by anything.

Well…if the posts were NUMBERED…the op posted above he/she was talking about academic awards, and put their stats. God I wish they would get post numbers!!

Thumper, thanks. I didn’t see that post.

“Yeah, academic. My SAT is a 1360 with a UW GPA of 3.64. Any idea on what kind of merit scholarship i would get? I really need like atleast 14k to go”

Is that what your parents are saying? What about student loans to help close any gaps. Your M+CR SAT is about an ACT 31. I don’t know how much merit UM gives for that.

I don’t want loans. I’m just trying to get the 61K down to around 30K atleast, my dad said he would put in like 15k a year maximum.

So basically, you are looking at getting $30,000 in merit scholarship money from U of Miami? Good luck! I’m not sure their merit awards are that high.

ETA…are you willing to get a job? Or is that something you don’t want either? The direct loan of $5500 would partially fill your gap for U of Miami. So would income from a job.

I’m not meaning to sound snarky, but I hope you have an affordable Plan B just in case the money isn’t there for U of Miami…because it just might not be there.

“I don’t want loans. I’m just trying to get the 61K down to around 30K atleast, my dad said he would put in like 15k a year maximum.”

I’m confused. if your dad will only pay $15k, and the school costs $61k, then you’re going to need $45k in merit. That’s not going to happen.

What do you mean by getting costs down to $30k? IF your dad will only pay $15k and you don’t want any loans, then you have to get costs down to nearly $15k.

I think you’re confused. The school is not going to award you financial aid, AND THEN give you merit on top of that. NO. The school will take the merit and apply it to “need”. You’re going to have to pay all the rest.

Im not looking to get 30k in merit scholarship money. I am getting around $5,000 from being a fl resident & bright futures. I am getting $8,000 back from prepaid (2k/year lets say) so now its down to 53k/yr. Yes i am interested in getting a job at UM.

$61k COA

$5k from Bright Futures
$2k from prepaid

$15k from parents

$22k

$61k COA

$22k (subtract - this money from parents, prepaid and BF))

$39k <<<< Where is that coming from???

well food (5k) and computer (i have) and transportation (no car) takes out 7k, i am hoping to get 16k in scholarship money, then i am hoping to get a job. I may be able to get 20K from parents

i basically have a free ride to FGCU Honors and to UCF, but i feel like i need UM

If you have prepaid, you need to go to a state school. You are not going to get the benefit of Fl prepaid (tuition at the cost you paid years ago) at a private school (only get what you put in back). Prepaid, with bright futures of $3000, plus your father’s $15k is all you’ll need at any state school. Don’t like UF? How about UNF for engineering?

Why are you not counting food??? What are you going to eat?

Transportation doesn’t just mean “car”. It means the transportation that will get you back and forth to the campus and around town. How far do you live from UM? I don’t think computer is included in COA.

How much can you contribute each year from a job? $3k?
