What seems like a reasonable income for a family with an income under $40K, without child support, and money vested in a retirement fund?

Not sure. My adjusted gross income is about 71k and my efc is usually around 16K

It is hard to say as there are variables we do not know such as number of parents, number in household, number in college, number in college, age of older parent. If you are loooking at FAFSA schools primary home and retirement money is not looked at. If you are looking at profile schools they are looked at and financial info for both custodial and non custodial parents (and their spouses) must be provided.

Run your numbers through a FAFSA calculator like the one at FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid

does anyone know how the profile assesses the ncp? do they add the two incomes? also, does profile handle 529 plans as FAFSA--not reportable if in students' name for this upcoming school year '08/'09
