Effect of Classmates' Being Admitted

How much does the fact that many of my classmates have been admitted to the same top schools (Ivies, top-20) EA/ED that I will apply to affect my chances? I have a high school class of around 90 students, all of whom are competitive applicants.

BUMP please …

Come on, guys. Surely I’m not the only person worried about this right now…

I have heard colleges claim that they will fill as many seats in their college from one particular school as they find qualified, but at most of these super-selective schools, they can afford to “build a diverse community,” so how likely are they really to admit half a dozen kids from the same school?

It depends if you are better or worse than them…

I don’t exactly have a list of their scores, but I’m still a competitive applicant myself, academically and in terms of extracurriculars. I don’t know, maybe this is too broad a question, but I was hoping someone would be able to offer some advice nevertheless…

Look to the historical (last 5 years) averages for your school. If your school uses Naviance, start there. Ask your GC for the information otherwise.
If 5 students from your high school are admitted to a certain college in a typical year, then it is not a big deal if 1 or 2 have already been admitted ED (especially where your stats within your high school context are strong).

The conventional wisdom is that individual achievement trumps any sort of “quota” for admitees per school. Two years ago, my HYP alma mater accepted 4 kids from my nearby school. They usually admit 0-1 each year. That year, the applicants must have been particularly strong individuals.

And whatever the real answer is: you can’t do anything about it right?
