Effect of GPA

I had a few questions regarding the GPA.
Is the UW GPA that I submit to universities an average of all my 4 years at high school?
If my GPA in grade 9 and 10 was fairly low (such as receiving 80%), but my grade 11 GPA was 4.0, will that hurt my chances to universities significantly?

it depends on the school but i’m in the same boat as you. upward trend is generally good which is what the Brown admissions rep said to me. I think you’ll be okay, especially if your course load is increasing in difficulty.

if it scares you a lot then don’t apply to your top choice ED if it won’t make much of a difference (<10% difference in ED and RD) and keep awesome grades senior year with a lot of rigorous courses to show colleges that you actually did get better and they’re not gambling on you.

I was thinking of apply to Carnegie Mellon ED.

This is old but according to Us News the admittance rate for ED is actually lower

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/right-school/timeline/articles/2009/09/30/colleges-where-applying-early-decision-helps

If you have a rigorous course load and a good ACT/SAT and extra curricular activities though, i think the upward trend wouldn’t be detrimental to your acceptance if you really want to apply early decision.

Although, level of interest is considered “important” according to their common data so it really is pick your poison in your case.

Applying RD would show them your improvement/strong grades
Applying ED would show them that it is your very 1st choice

Either way their are pros and cons

Okay, thanks.

If you are considering CMU ED, they do not take in account freshman year grades anyways

Well, my grade 10 grades well around 83%, so…

Like a different poster, admissions officers LOVE an upward trend. But if the rest of your application is good enough, the 83% (which is a 3.0 i think) should not be holding you back too much. What is your overall GPA as of now?

@wannabefeynman‌
In grade 11 it is a 4.0.

I know, I saw that. So you’re saying your overall is a 3.5?

Wait I thought you said you were at like 99.75% GPA on your chance thread?

The first question in the first post was of genuine interest to me. The other question was for my cousin.

I really should have them post, rather than me…
