Effect of Re-taking the SAT

Hello,

I took the SAT exam this October and got an average score of 1890-
Reading: 590
Writing: 590
Math: 710

So I am planning to re-take the exam this December and if that exam does not go as well as planned then probably again in January. But my friend was suggesting that taking the SAT 1 exam too many times might create an unfavorable impression about me.

So, will taking the SAT 1 exam more than once affect my admission?

No. Taking it more than once should not affect your admission. It’s when you start taking it more than three times that an unfavorable impression might be formed of you.

No. My son attends a top New England prep and they are all encouraged to take standardized tests multiple times: 1 PLAN, 2 PSAT’s, a minimum of 3 SAT’s and 2 ACT’s. My son has already taken all of the above and three SAT II’s and he is taking another set Nov 6. His guidance counselor says the max number of times the ACT can be taken is 12!! (I think we are set with what we’ve done so far…can’t imagine that). I asked if it is detrimental to one’s app to take the tests so many times and he said absolutely not. Supposedly prep school gc’s really know their stuff, so I am counting on him being correct.

I don’t think I would have to give the SATs more than 3 times. . But its a relief to know that multiple exams will not affect my admission in a wrong way.

Thanks

Don’t worry about taking the SAT 3 times. That’s pretty typical. That’s why some schools super-score.

What schools are you applying to? Most schools don’t care even if you take the SAT lots and lots of times.

I asked this on another thread, but this one seems more relevant to my question:

D scored 760.740.800 on 3rd take in June and sent scores to all the colleges to which she’s applying - paid for several. She’d taken the test Sept, Jan, and June of Junior year. The second two were paid by her high school to encourage improvement - not a need based thing. She thought she was done testing.

The beginning of this year, her principal encouraged (kindly harassed??) her to try again, he wanted someone to get a perfect score. The school pays so she took the October test. She had scores sent to different schools that had mailed her scholarship info, but not the four highly selective she really likes, one that requires all scores. She improved to 800V, but dropped in M & W (lowest of all 4 takes?).

What do we do now? She does not mind self-reporting, especially since 800.740.800 would be nice if that is truly, what schools consider, but I just cannot see paying more money to have them sent.

Any advice?

mom2collegekids:
I am a junior so I’m not applying to any colleges this year. But I did choose around 15 colleges which includes around 6 highly selective ones.

getalifemom:
As far as I know, it is possible to get into a college with scores around 700 in reading, even the highly selective ones. But, I think it is worth taking the chance and sending your D’s october results as well. Maybe it might help her with getting admission into her favorite college.
