even though i'm not a heavy smoker, i cannot live without smoking at least 8 per day.
to all the people who successfully quit smoking, could you please enlighten me with the effective method to quit? this thing is QUITE addictive!

8 smokes a day?? That's not heavy smoking???? Gosh...

Well, first of all, there's many different ways to go about this. You can either A) Quit cold turkey or B)Gradually work up to it.

Also, there's nicotine patches to help your addiction.

like what hoo said--try those patches. also, you might want to ask your doctor for advice. one other thing--try looking up stories or whatever about smoking nightmares and how it causes cancer, etc. if you find a really hidieous (spelling?) story it'll freak you out to death and might make you never want to smoke again. Every 8 seconds, someone in the world dies due to tobacco. seriously. 1 out of 3 smokers are estimated to eventually die from a tobacco-related disease. wanna be one of 'em?

i went on jogs or short runs to quit smoking. it really helps with the urges. you should try it some time.

If you're really desperate, you could try conditioning yourself to get disgusted with smoking. This is kind of unorthodox, but it worked for my friend. He was starting to get hooked to smoking, but one day he smoked too many cigarettes and had an upset stomach, so he threw up. He now mentally links smoking to that time when he threw up, so he can't stand smoking now. I guess if you can condition yourself to connect smoking to something that disgusts you, then it might help you quit.

watch requiem for a dream

haha umm requiem for a dream would be more like if you wanted to quit shooting up heroin. but yeah, okay whatever floats your boat.

i owuld suggest that you tell all your friends and family and request that they help you get through it. my friend did that with me so every time she treid to smoke later, i would talk her through it and soemtimes have to take drastic measures (ie grabbing the cigarette and throwing it out). also, get into other healthy stuff like good diet and exercise, then you wont WNAT to screw up your body anymore. good luck!

This is what I tell smokers I know (as I work at a supermarket, 95% above 18 smoke)... I went to the RIT College and Careers fair and I chose the Wanna go to Med School? program... Well, the professor showed us the cadaver of a normal person and a smoker and well let me tell you about the smoker...
He died of pneumonia first of all, but during that he was suffering from lung cancer, stomach cancer, spinal cord cancer, brain cancer, liver cancer, throat cancer, and pancreatic cancer... Also let me tell you, his lung was not a pretty sight... It was black and hard like a rock (it should feel like a sponge)... His brain had hard spots all over it... Ohh and only one of his lungs was working because the other was destroyed from the smoke....
Will that make you quit?

HAve your friends tie you to the bed or something and not let you out. You'll eventually break from the urge someday

My husband smoked for 40 years very heavily...the only thing that worked for him was the Commit lozenges...he has now been off cigarettes for over a year (yahoo!)..for some reason, having something to suck on was the key for him...the patch never worked, he couln't stnad the gum...but the lozenges did. Now, the downside is that you are still getting the nicotine and, I suppose, can become addicted to the lozenges. But at least you are not sucking stuff into your lungs and blowing it out for others to breathe...try them! Good Luck!

Stop buying cigarettes!

The only way to effectively quit smoking is to go cold turkey. Also throw or give away all of your lighters and left over cigarettes. After that, try to cut down drinking or stay out of bars all together because that is an instant trigger. I had quit smoking for like 6 months before I went down to Kent, but I had a smoking room. Then one innocent time I was like one won't hurt me, (drinking at time) and it tasted SOO good. Then after one or two cigarettes a week eventually turned back into the half a pack a day habit. Not currently on a quitting smoking kick right now, I am trying to cut back drinking significantly, then I will work on cigarettes. If you can successfully quit smoking this will by far be the greatest accomplishment in your life. College was easier than quitting smoking. Also, you probably will fail a couple of times, but don't give up hope.

I know it's hard to quit, joev... but quitting smoking would be the "greatest accomplishment" of a person's life? That sounds pretty unimpressive.

I completely agree with harri. Force yourself to become disgusted with them. I tried this once, and I quit EASILY cold turkey for about 6 months. And the only reason I started back is because I was drinking at the time. Smoke so many that you run to the bathroom and throw up. I promise the smell, taste, and sight of a cigarette will be MUCH less "appetizing" afterwards.

Try some caffeine, ephedrine, and yohimbine.

grow a pair and do it

I smoked for 3 months. I smoked a pack every 3 days or so. So I’d say a good 6-7 smokes a day. It was getting too expensive for me so one day I just thought “I have to stop, this will be my last box”. And I just did. I didnt have any problems. I dont know why. The last smoke was really nostalgic, I inhaled deeply and thinking “Cant believe this will be my last one” but it worked out fine, havent had any cravings or whatever for a month now.

I stopped smoking because of smoking, I dont really care about anything else since smoking is very relaxing and I loved to study while smoking. Im planning on smoking again when I get some money.

The light-bulb moment when I understood that smoking one cigarette sets the body up for needing/wanting the next cigarette. Avoid the first one and break the link. This worked for me..and reading the book by Allen Carr entitled the Easy Way to Stop Smoking.

Start doing heroin.

You all do realize that this is over 3 years old, right?
