Effects of a Misdemeanor on Application?

If this is your first citation of any kind you may be able to do a probation thing (deferred adjudication is the formal phrase where I live) and if you take an alcohol awareness class and stay conviction free for 6-12 months they will drop the charges.(no speeding tickets either!) I would be surprised if anything happened at school since it is so common an offense.

My side advice is to push your court date back as far and as many times as you can. If you are nice to the clerks they will usually be pretty nice about it. Summer is not that far away in legal time so you may have a shot at just waiting til you graduate.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Just wondering - did you bring the alchy? It seems like you're the type who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time...

Most likely - if this is the first time you have gotten into any trouble - you will most likely not receive a conviction - unless you get into any more trouble - you may have a small fine and community service - which when done may result in an expunged record if you remain problem free for a specified period of time - which you will not have to report.

If you're turning 18 this year, you can have the record sealed.

I was arrested and charged with 1 felony and three misdemeanors

It ended up being just two misdemeanors and no felony.

There was never any conviction and when I turned 18 a couple weeks back, I had the records sealed.

So I can put it all behind me.

Though I'm still in probation.

PM if you want to talk about it. As you can see, I was in a pretty bad situation myself. It all happened less than a year ago when I was a junior.

If you do call the admissions office "anonomously," do not call from your home phone. Many businesses (mine included) now have Caller ID...

most schools require a final report from the HS to make sure you graduated, etc. In the Common Application they specifically ask the discipline questions about suspensions or convictions, and I would imagine most schools not using it do so as well.

What state do you live in? As Adam7261 points out, in many jurisdictions you can go thru a diversion program in which the charges will be dropped if you complete a program and have no further arrests. If you have not done so already, I urge you go get a lawyer to help you on this.

If it turns out you are convicted then you should contact each place you've applied and find out their policy; do they expect to be notified? Don't think that you can just "forget" to tell them and hope for the best. Your school may find out about the conviction and report it, there are other ways it can surface. You're always better off being up-front about things and dealing with the consequences then just crossing your fingers and hoping; if your college finds out after you're enrolled, for example, you can be kicked out and then imagine what it will be like trying to find a new school after that!

ok so i know a lot about this because i was once in a very similar situation.

i got a PI (public intox) a year ago...im almost positive my school did not find out. my trial date was not until oct. 31st.

after i got the ticket i researched laws like crazy trying to find a way out of it.

basically, most applications ask if you have a)been arrested b)convicted of a crime

some ask if you were placed on probation.

so as of right now, just answer honestly. im assuming for a MIP you were not arrested. i was very lucky not to get arrested. theres no way you will get convicted because im pretty sure you wont go to trial...you'll get deffered ajudication or whatever its called and probation.
so you might have to say you were placed on probation...unless you want to try it and hope to get a verdict of not-guilty.

i dont know your circumstances, but you will need a lawyer.

yeah so basically im applying to lots of ivys so i was SOOO nervous about everything....i was so lucky. i went to trial and was found not-guilty.

i hope everything works out for you!!
