Effects of a suspension on college admission.

So my sophomore year I got caught stealing from girls in my school. When i started to get questions about it i tried to return the stuff i took but that only made matters worse and then led to my 3 day suspension at the age of 14. I am now 17 about to turn 18 and have to check the suspension box on common app, How will this affect my chances of getting into schools like UVA, or UNC Chapel if i have a 4.4 gpa and am black and top 5% of my class?!?!

Ask if your school if it lists suspensions on your records. If they don’t (and most schools I’ve seen in my region don’t), then there’s no need to state that you were suspended on your college applications. Most schools purposely do not wish to include that their students were suspended because they don’t want to hurt an application’s chances into universities.

they don’t include it in my record but it just didn’t feel right not including it in the common app so i clicked the yes button and am now regretting it

i believe you have three options:

— apply to more schools and edit your common application information to where it states you weren’t suspended
— send an e-mail stating your clicking the “yes” option was a mistake
— write about how the experience changed you, how you regret it, and how it prompted you to grow as an individual in the “extra information” section of the common application

most (if not all) schools allow you to submit extra information to your admission officers to add to your file, so if you can’t write about it in the common app, then write about it in a separate document and submit it separately to your schools (if you choose to do number three).
