Hello, I enjoy English but I am not the best at essay writing. Next year I will take two semester classes for English, and was wondering how bad would it look if I took only one honors level semester course and one regular? I am aiming for Tier 1 and 2 schools.
Thank you!

Not all English classes are writing classes. That depends a lot on the teacher and your school’s curriculum. You might want to check to see which teacher is a better fit.

I thought, from your thread title, that you were asking how bad a ‘regular’ class is compared to an honors class, as in weighting. If you school weights, then for sure take the honors class. Although you may hear people here mention the ‘unweighted’ and ‘weighted’ discussion, I have heard schools don’t recalculate. So if your school weights, go for it. It would be higher weight.

In addition, every HS sends out their profile, which tells the adcoms how many honors and APs they offer. Colleges would look down on someone who passed up the chance to take an honors class when it is available.

Yea, our school does weight. The thing is that out of the two semester course, an essay course is required while the other one is not. I was thinking of maybe taking the regular essay course but the honors other English course.
