Effects of plagiarism in college admissions?

hello everyone!

I am now a rising senior and I am currently applying for schools however there is one thing that is haunting me from my sophomore year. In English class I was called to my school’s Honor Council because my english paper had been reported as plagiarism. I was totally unaware that I had even plagiarized because integrity is super important to me and I would never purposely ctrl-c, ctrl-v anything. This incident had been labeled as unintentional plagiarism because I had just cited my sources incorrectly but I agreed to take full responsibility because I can’t deny that it was my ignorance of citing my sources accurately that led me all the way to a referral to the Honor Council. I left this all in the past, and even somewhat settled the misunderstanding with my English teacher (he was actually the head of the Honor Council) however now that it is time for college apps I am worried that this little blip on my school discipline record could ruin my chances of getting into any college. I did not get suspended or anything, and definitely did not get into anymore trouble with the Honor Council after the incident. My friends told me to mention this incident in the Common App essay to explain this all to the College admissions people, but I actually read somewhere that there is no way a college can see this incident and if they can’t know about it then there’s no need to even mention this, right? Please help me! I really want to get into college! Thank you all so much

You need to talk to your g.c.

If it was resolved and no other incidents you may be able to get it removed.

Is this actually on your permanent record? That seems very harsh. Do we have all the facts?

What was the consequence recommended by the Honor Council?

@snarlatron the consequence was just a 50% on the paper and an email sent home

That sounds like it’s not even on your transcript, in which case you have nothing to fret about. Talk to your counselor, as suggested above. That’s good advice.

@baby_pink of course ask your GC but I have never seen this kind of consequence as reportable to colleges, only probation or a suspension. Good luck!

It’s probably not going to be an issue (it wasn’t a major discipline infraction, it took place sophomore year), but yeah, best to check with your adviser at school.
