Does anyone know how “impacted” of a major Egyptology is at Brown? I know it’s one of the few schools in the country to offer a B.A. in that field so I was wondering if my chances of getting in would be lowered if I applied as an Egyptology major. Or does the field of study you apply as make no big difference in admissions?

The field of study you apply make no big difference in admissions.
The only major that’s usually impacted is engineering and pre-med + the ones that Brown requires supplementary essays for.

ditto.

However, someone who can really show that Egyptology is a sincere interest might have an advantage in admissions.

Usually any other unique interest for that matter.

Question: so if you apply to one of the physical sciences that require an additional essay, how are your chances " impacted" ?

If you show a genuine interest in the physical sciences, you probably see a slight boost. If you don’t show any real interest in them, you probably won’t be impacted positively, and may get a slightly negative impact.

Does Brown try to have majors in those fields although Brown says it doesn’t admit by major?

Brown tries to get an eclectic student body: they know people often won’t stay in their concentration, but they want to make sure the interests represented by the incoming freshman class are diverse enough. And I think just by having an Egyptology department (unlike almost any other top uni) they ensure that they’ll get good applicants who’ll end up in the department (though I think there are only like 3-5 who end up getting an Egyptology concentration each year, but I may be wrong).

Yeah, like chsowlflax said, field of study plays little to no role in your admissions decision. Brown knows that most students end up changing their concentrations anyway.

Choosing egyptology is fine, but it’d be suspicious if you chose it and nothing in your essays or extracurrics mentioned your interest in the subject.

It is unclear from your post whether you have already applied or are considering doing so. If the latter is the case, you may want to read over my summary of Egyptology programs.

Brown’s department is decent, but naturally there are equally good or better programs worth consideration. Unfortunately all are at elite universities, and as others have said, choice of major gives no boost.
