ELC admission - how many UC's should I apply to?

Hi to all, I am a new member....

I was just wondering if you are ELC...and you want to go to a specific UC like UCSD or UCLA...should you apply to safer schools also like UCSB or UCD?

If I apply to 4 UC's will it hurt my chances to get into UCLA..?

I am just wondering if whoever looks at your application and says "lets place this ELC student at UCSB"...

so what I mean to say is if I only apply to UCLA or UCSD will I have better chances to get into to those two instead of applying to 4 UC's...

I hope I am making sense...I want to go to UCLA...ELC says you are guarneteed admission at one of the UCs (maybe not the one of your choice) so what happens if you apply at two and dont get in?

thanks!

the UC's don't care how many you apply to....the adcoms at Berkeley and UCLA know that you will apply to other campuses, and they hope that you do, just in case you don't get into the flagships.

The four 'guarantee' schools are: Irvine, SB, Riverside and Merced. ELC apps to SB have a 90% chance, and it is 99%+ to the other campuses. ELC means little at the non-elc campuses.

The elc dept does not place you in any campus. You must apply to whichever campus interests you.

but do you think if you have UCI or UCSB on your app that UCB and UCLA will pass you on to the other UCs like Riverside and Merced...unless you are stellar?

I guess what I am saying is - if you are guaranteed admission through the ELC - and you only apply to 2 UCs - do they have to admit you?

are my chances the same at UCB and UCLA if I apply to 5 UCs instead of just applying to those two?

thanks

your chances are the same

I was talking with my friend about this yesterday. I have the ELC thing, and said, if you just apply to UCB, won't you just get in? Ofcourse not...

I'm only applying to UCLA, UCI, UCSB, UCD. Most likely going to I, SB.

yes, your chances are the same. elc is only a minor, minor factor for Cal and LA. If you put down Irvine, you will be accepted there for sure (they accept all elc apps); Berkeley and LA will not care, since their acceptance criteria can be different. I know of a couple of kids who received a Chancellor's scholarship at Irvine, and turned down Berkeley for the $$.

Last year, one parent posted that her (his?) child applied to SD, B, and LA and was rejected by all three, but the ELC office sent a letter mentioning that there was still space at Irvine....but, who knows if they will do that this year.

they have to, it'll look really really bad if they did not fulfill their promise (the admittance thing)
