ELC for UC's

Our school ranks students only by deciles. Basically, there is no specific rank. When i ask for my rank, they just say 1st decile meaning im top ten percent. HOw do students get ELC in schools dat only rank in deciles?

Are you a junior or senior? If you're a senior, you would know by now if you're ELC. I can tell you how it worked in S's school. At the beginning of senior year, certain students are identified by the counseling office and parents are asked to sign a permission form allowing school to release transcripts to UC. UC makes its own determination as to who is ELC. Then the students are notified.

If theres 300 students in your class, 1st decile is definetly top 4 percent.

O i see...well i am a senior..but my counselor said that UC's for our school will not count ELC for our high school becuz our school only does Decile ranking. OH we have 621 students and all my transscipt says is..1st decile. My counselor would not tell me if i am in top 4 percent

I can tell you right now that your counselor is wrong. The UC’s count ELC into the admissions no matter what high school you go to. It would take too much time, effort, and money to take your high school and admit people a different way. The UC system request that the high school send transcripts from the top 10- 12%. So your school could have sent if they sent any at all the top 10% and then the UC evaluate and calculate your UC gpa and see if your in the top 4% in your class from uc gpa. They ask for the top 10-12% because many people high school rank do not match up with the rank via the UC gpa. If you want me to give examples and explain why then just ask.

Your in CA right?
If your not then that’s why.
If you are in CA then I would suggest calling the UC system and finding out about what happened and why your school didn’t send out any thing for the ELC and how this will affect you.

I could be wrong but I’m 90% sure that all CA high schools send transcripts to determine ELC.

Are all home schooled students in the top 4% of their class?

Mr. B: good question, and I don't know the answer to that one. However, every other post is slightly correct. All Cal HS are requested by UC to calculate the ELC (top 4%) of their school according to UC-approved courses for grades 10-11. Then, the school, not UC, ranks all the kids by gpa. In the event of ties by gpa, the ties go to the kids; thus, the final list could be 4% +. (The process is described on the UC website, but I can't find the link right now). UC just audits those HS lists for accuracy, but the HS has the ownership and responsibility to prepare and send them.
