okay so i was confused cus our college counselor told us the names of magnet students and regular students who have gotten ELC. but people (as well as some research) are telling me that they are done and said in august?
then why did she give us those names? i wasn't in it, that's why i am worried if i still dont have a chance until june, you know?
was she telling us where we stand? or thats who got them SO FAR?
im confused. :(
and if yu dot have it, is it really hard to get into uc?
eek, please answer my questions thank youuu :)

first off, elc is not necessary for acceptance into a UC. It only guarantees you acceptance into one of the guarantee schools, which last year were SB, Irvine, Riverside, and Merced. However, plenty of non-elc students are accepted at a UC campus. Remember, elc is only the top 4% of each HS class, but the UCs are designed to accept the top 12% of HS kids statewide, so there is plenty of room.

At the end of your Jr year, ALL schools are requested by UC to send transcripts of the top 12% of the high school's class, and the UC will recalculate based on its criteria. The UCs notify all ecl students in Sept of thier senior year.

She was probably telling you which names were submitted - that is, which were in the top 12%. The GPA has to be calculated from specific courses that you have to have completed to be considered for ELC -- so its possible that even if you have a high GPA if you haven't taken all required courses that you might not be eligible. And the ELC GPA calculation could be different than your regular GPA since it is based only on specific coursework.

Again, don't worry about it. ELC is nice because it does give an edge at admission at some campuses, but as long as you are eligible in the statewide context, you are guaranteed a spot.

jay:

you are correct in that elc status is not calculated until this summer, and WILL include spring semester grades. So, some of those students who your GC believes to be in the top 4% as defined by UC (and not necessarily your HS transcript), could drop lower if their grades decline.

i don't think it's guaranteed only 1 uc. cus ive heard stories of pplz getting in i think uci and ucsd with the elc?
i sorta hope it is? cus i dontt hink its fair that a classmate who took easy classes is in it, but i took honors and ap in 10th and 11th. (currently 11th btw)
& i also heard its the "college of your choice" you get to go to. meaning any uc you applied, youll get into if ur an elc.
again, please answer if anyone is sure of this
thanks! ur help is extremely appreciated!:)

I was ELC last year and I am positive about the information below. ELC DOES NOT GUARANTEE YOU ADMISSION into schools like UCLA, UCB, and UCSD. It only guarantees you admission into the UC system and schools like UCI, UCSB, UCR, and UCM. I can't emphasize this enough because it is a common error. But chances are that if you only apply to UCSD, UCLA, and UCB, and are rejected from all of them, the UC system may call you up, ask if they can forward your app to UCSB - even if you never applied there in the first place - and you'll probably get in there so you will have a UC to go to.

"i sorta hope it is? cus i dontt hink its fair that a classmate who took easy classes is in it, but i took honors and ap in 10th and 11th. (currently 11th btw)"

Schools will usually send transcripts of a lot of the people near the top percent of their high school (maybe 10%), and only little less than half will actually get ELC (you get notified in September if you actually have the ELC status) - the top 4%. They do take into account difficulty of classes.

"i also heard its the "college of your choice" you get to go to. meaning any uc you applied, youll get into if ur an elc.
" No. It guarantees admission into a UC - not the UC of your choice. 40% of ELC students get rejected from Berkeley and UCLA.

since UCI is a growing campus, it has accepted all qualified elc applicants over the past few years, and indications are that it will continue to do so. Ditto, Riverside and Merced. But, I would suggest that Cal and UCLA and, possibly, UCSD will never be an elc-guarantee campus. As ebony notes, 40% of elc applicants are rejected by the state flagships.

elc is based on Soph and Jr year a-g classes only, with bonus points for UC-approved honors/AP/IB courses; UC uses your HS transcript only, so if dual enrollment college classes are on your transcript, they will count those as well - with bonus point. There is no cap on bonus points under elc, so yes, harder classes count more (+1 grade point).

ELC is kind of interesting....

At first, I was upset when my son did not make ELC. He goes to a rigorous public charter school and with a 3.9 gpa he still wasn't in the top 4% of his school (perhaps 80 seniors in his school?)

He still made it into Cal, UCLA, UCSD etc though so I guess ELC isn't all that necessary to get into the upper tier UCs....
