ELC importance

i was just wondering what the importance of the ELC is in admissions for UCs specially UCLA. i was denied with a 4.5 gpa rank 1, decent ecsm 1400s SATS. but my friend got in with a flat 4.0 1270 SAT and no honors or ap classes and barely any ecs. he did have the eligibility in the local conext(ELC) though. how important is this to have? thanks

well depends which UCs did he get accepted? ELC is not the most important thing but it gives you a great boost b/c UCs dont have a true ranking system. The only way to know some form of rank from a student is if the either get ELC or not.

he got into UCLA. thats what made is surprising with his low stats

dood...it was his essay

i dont think so because i read his essays and they werent that great

ELC only matters at the UCs besides LA and Berkeley mainly because UCSD, UCD, UCSB, etc all use a point system and ELC gives you an extra 300pts toward your final score. At UCSD for example, you needed roughly 7500pts to get in (<a href="http://henry.sandi.net/college/application/ucsd_application_scoring.htm%5B/url%5D">http://henry.sandi.net/college/application/ucsd_application_scoring.htm</a>) and the 300pts might have been enough to help someone out. However, UCLA and UCB don't use a point system because they have so many well-qualified candidates. I'm sure he got in because they needed someone with a talent he had. It has nothing to do with GPA or SAT or ELC really. Maybe he was good at knitting or something and they wanted that. You never know...

how did u NOT get ELC if you're ranked number 1? that's impossible

you still have to apply for it to get it

I think ELC will definetly help a student get into any of the UC's except UCLA and UCB. If you are ELC Santa Barbara, Irvine and Davis become your safeties, UCSD your safe match.

slimlic is correct. With your class rank/gpa you qualify for ELC. No application is needed. It's automatic for the top 5% or 10%(don't know which) of students at each High School.

i qualified but didnt apply for it. i know la and berkley dont use point systems but im sure ELC has some significance right?

Maybe you got the same admissions person I had:)

I was rejected a couple of years ago from UCLA with a 3.98 UW, 1550, 800,800,780 SAT I and II scores. EC's were lousy but figured I would've gotten in on the basis of academics alone.

hmm... i'm ELC... i had lower SAT scores than hcex22 and norcalguy. my unweighted GPA was around 3.9. i got accepted to UCLA

did you have good ecs? cuz now that i think of it mine werent that great either

yeah... i had good EC's...

There may be any number of reasons why ELC did not apply in this situation.

1) You may not have signed the consent forms necessary to submit ELC information over the UC authorities.

2) Your high school may not participate under the ELC program.

3) Can't think of any more.

ELC isn't that important... I didn't apply for ELC.
But I got into UCI, UCSD, UCLA...

joemama, a consent is required in order to "apply" for ELC status. Without the paper turned in, the school cannot send your grades to the UC system, which is required to check ELC eligibility.

just to tell u..elc does boost anyone's chances at any given UC.our ELC "cuttoff" was 4.0. I tihnk thats the typical ELC cutoff. weighted UC GPA

you have to apply for ELC? i always thought it was just that they took anyone in top 4% from school and tey automatically say ur ELC... i never conscented to elc..my school just sent transcripts to UCs over the summer for everyone from top 4%

there's no "ELC cutoff" I thought... it's just top 4% of kids in your senior class.

so if you're school doesn't have the brightest kids with high gpa's, it doesn't matter... if valedictorian has 3.1 then he/she gets ELC
