ELC Snub

Hi all,
I’m a senior from a small school with a graduating class of 38. I have the 2nd highest GPA (4.254), SAT (2270), and ACT (35). Yeah I know, I’m second in everything :(. Well in July my counselor nominated 6 seniors for ELC and for some reason, he didn’t pick me. All my friends think that I should have been picked; I have no idea what he’s doing. Will this affect my chances of getting into UC Berkeley or UCLA. I honestly have been feeling snubbed and resentful for the past 3 months because my stats definitely scream ELC in my class.

Thanks!

P.S. I’m not some egotistic CCer who just likes to brag about himself… It’s just that I worked so hard the past 3 years and I didn’t even get ELC

Did you complete the appropriate A-G courses to be nominated? http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/freshman/california-residents/local-path/ If you did you should talk to your GC.

Yeah, I already talked to him a few weeks ago. He wouldn’t tell me why I wasn’t chosen though. I’ve taken all the advanced classes (Including a 5 on AP Calc BC last year) but guess that wasn’t good enough…

I was unaware that you had to be nominated for ELC for the UC’s??? If you are the top 9% of your HS class or top 9% of your state, then you are ELC eligible. There is no advantage/disadvantage for ELC other than you will be guaranteed admission to a UC (not of your choice) if you are not accepted to any UC’s of your choosing. Go onto the UC website and see if your ELC eligible. This will not affect your chances at UCB/UCLA.

???

ELC is determined by whether you UC-recalculated GPA is higher than the historic top 9% threshold UC-recalculated GPA from your high school (and you have to have the a-g subject requirements).

My counselor had to NOMINATE six students for ELC and I wasn’t picked. That’s what I’m angry about, even my friends who got it said I got screwed over.

This is how ELC is determined by UC admissions:
How do I qualify?

If you are a California resident and rank in the top 9 percent of students in your California high school class — and your high school participates in our ELC program — you may be eligible for ELC designation.

We will identify the top 9 percent of students based on GPA in UC-approved coursework completed in the 10th and 11th grades. To be considered for ELC, you must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and complete the following “a-g” courses prior to your senior year:

History/social science 1 year
2 years Mathematics
2 years English
1 year Laboratory science
1 years Language other than English
4 years College-preparatory elective
(chosen from the subjects listed above or another course approved by the university)
other a-g courses
After you enter your coursework and grades in the UC application, we’ll compare your GPA to the historic top GPA for your school. If you meet or exceed that GPA, you’ll be designated ELC and we’ll add a note to your application.

When will I find out if I’m designated ELC?

As an applicant from California, your application will be automatically screened for ELC eligibility when you apply. There’s no extra paperwork.

After submitting the application, you can return to the My UC Application page to see whether or not you’ve been designated as being in the top 9 percent of your class.

So even though my counselor didn’t nominate me for ELC, there’s still a chance that I’ll be ELC when I return to my UC Application page due to my grades and test scores?

According to the UC website, the counselor does not have a say in your ELC eligibility. It will be determined by your grades when you self report on the UC application. I would not worry since ELC will only guarantee that if you are shut out of the UC admissions, you will be given a spot (if there is room) at UC Merced. It will not have a huge an impact on your admission chances. You look like a competitive applicant regardless.
