what do the midterms or finals consist of?

^
don't play down the importance of the essays though. although the first essay is only worth 8% of your grade, collectively, the essays are worth 35% of your total grade; which is, indeed, a pretty big chunk. the midterm was 25% and the final was 35/40%

depends on the professor really...for the midterms it's usually a little more than a page of multiple choice, then term matching, identifying quotes from readings, then a short essay.

the final (for me in mmw2) was multiple choices, term matching, identifying quotes, a short essay, then a longer essay (in a little notebook that you will have to buy for many of your classes' final to write essays in - "bluebooks"). what's great about my professor for mmw2 (cohen), he gave us ALL the essay questions (not the short essay..the short essay you write about a brief passage the test gives you) prior to the final, but you just don't know which one you have to write on until the day of the final. but just prepare for all four questions, and you should have no problemo :)

the content of the tests obviously vary by professor, but the usual format is a half multiple choice/matching (stuff like that) and the second half an essay(s)

edit: dang, decoy beat me by a few seconds

yeah, but at least the percentages go up as you write more. it's because most people do poorly on their first essay, so it's only worth 8%. the second essay (which you should now know what to write according to what your TA expects) is worth 12%, and so on. you can also raise your grade by simply attending all your discussion classes twice a week (for mmw2..for mmw1, it's once a week)

haha lol! ^^

i think my professor (chang) was actually even easier than cohen.

he gave us the 4 possible essay questions as well; however, instead of choosing one out of the four to be on the final, he chose two and left the decision to us as to which question we wanted to write about

ohh that's actually more nice than preparing for four possible questions! :) one of my suitemates had chang. she didn't hate him but she didn't like him either lol.

he was cool...his tests were pretty fair.

who you taking next quarter?

chamberlain...heard he's good, but still hard :( lol! we shall see in exactly one week ^^ how about you?

herbst.
once i heard he takes his dog to lecture, i was sold. hahaha

plus, he has the best time slot...since i hate waking up early :/ haha

ahhh! he brings his dog to lecture?! not fair! omg i love dogssss!! X0 LOL

totallllllllly know what you mean about waking early ugh. fall and winter quarter i started at 8 mwf and 9 tth every week, and i just..no..can't do it anymore..so for spring i made sure my schedule started at 10 and later hehe.

8 in the morning??!! screw that! i had trouble waking up for a 10 am class first quarter! hahaha

i felt bad for one of my buddies. he had a class everday at 8! it sucked for him because non of us go to sleep early so he'd always be ****ed at us for making so much noise :/ haha

dang, i can't say p issed?? that's gay

so, as a freshman at ERC, which teachers should i pick for MMW???

Also, what does it mean when it says "2 courses of intensive writing included"? does that mean that we only write for 2 quarters? what about the other 4 quarters? are these like...history/philosophy classes??

the 2 quarters of "intensive writing" mean you'll be writing three papers (two 4-6 pages and one 6-8 pages) during each quarter. you'll pretty much be writing non-stop, maybe a break of about a week between papers.

MMW 1 doesn't require any essay writing, MMW 2 and 3 (the 2 quarters of intensive writing) require 3 essays each, and the rest of the MMW quarters still require writing but only one paper due at the end of the quarter (this paper's about 10 pages)

ohhh man!! so then, who are the best, nicest professors for MMW?

so far from what i've heard, a majority like carlisle, chamberlain, and herbst

so honestly, in a scale of 1-5, how would you rate the difficulty of this course (MMW) for an average writer?

Looking over the Requirements, I'm really disappointed that there is no option for Hindi or Punjabi. Is there any way to get over the foreign language requirement? I'm not looking forward to more Spanish.

either get a +700 on an SAT II or pass an AP test
