Elections 2008: Political Rants

Just wondering everyone's views...

The whole situation is a debacle. I’ve been investigating half-seriously the steps one must take to emigrate to Scandinavia, Switzerland or New Zealand for some time now.

Vote for the lesser of the two evils is my stance.

Vote for the person who has already demonstrated honor is my stance.

OK, I’ll take the plunge. Vote: McCain/Palin. I know this will probably NOT be received in a positive fashion by many at UVA given the obvious Obama supporter presence on Grounds. But so what, I believe in McCain’s wisdom, years of experience, military experience, courage (to buck his own party), and heroism.
My absentee ballot was mailed ~one week ago.
I’m really saddened by the media bias where it’s totally fine to allow an effigy of Sarah Palin (mother of 5, Gov. of Alaska, wife, human being) to hang from a noose out in CA>>and everyone thinks this is just a fun Halloween prank. However, when an Obama effigy was found at a Kentucky University today>>there’s a huge outcry from the liberal media, and the FBI and Secret Service are actively investigating “this threat”. Oh and of course the Obama effigy was taken down immediately. Sarah still hangs by her noose in CA where tour buses drive by with tourists taking photos.
I deplore the sexist treatment, and disrespect towards women in this election, but that is beside the point.
Powderpuff is voting for McCain/Palin.

mccain…is whom i support.
but
obama…will be the winner.
obama…his change policy probably won’t be happening anytime in the near future.

honestly, i don’t see how these two candidates made it this far.

Becuase Huckabee wasn’t conservative enough, Ron Paul is too whack, Hillary didn’t stand up and say “vote for me, i’m a woman”, and Edward’s closet is a graveyard.

Oh, and I was pro-Hillary before she was ousted with disrespect too. Shame on America for having such a double standard. Racial equality is great, but it’s OK to bash women?>>Not. Shame.

With all due respect, Shoebox, Huckabee not conservative enough??? He’s been a minister for cryin’ out loud! Have you seen his new show on FOX? It’s pleasant, but bland in a ministerial sort of way. He talks as if he’s talking to his congregation.
I liked him though in the election process. He was/is funny, but I just couldn’t see him as the best VP candidate.>>(Maybe next cycle). I’m not sure who would have been the best VP choice though? I’m a Sarah fan.

powderpuff, I don’t really think that anyone is bashing Palin. It’s fair to call her what she is: a backwards and inept knuckle dragger. It’s also an outrage that she (and to some extent McCain) were nominated over tremendously more competent people in the republican party. Granted, there is little criticism of Obama’s preposterous cult of personality schtick, but whatever. It’s a ridiculous situation and I’m astonished that there aren’t more people in the media and at UVa who are completely bitter and cynical about it. But it’s unlikely that things will change now or in the future.

Well, “socially” he was conservative. But his proposed policies weren’t viewed as in-line with current Republican views. So I guess I should have said he isn’t republican-enough.
And I agree. Everyone always went on and on about Hillary and how she is a woman and fighting for them and that’s her purpose for running and blahblah. But, no one wants to point out Obama’s race, because that would be “immoral”. It totally sucks. I still think had she stood up and said “vote for me, i’m a woman” she would have gotten the vote. I think more people would have voted for her over Obama…not to be racist, but more people I think are against voting for a black man than a white woman. The “new south” isn’t a widespread feeling. It’s sad, but people are pretty open about it. You never saw someone saying they weren’t going to vote for Hillary because she has boobs.

Edit: just saw Cav’s post. About died laughing. I agree, I have no idea what McCain was thinking when he chose her. I like him quite a bit, but to think of her as leading the Senate, being a close adviser to him, not to mention the large possibility that she could become President…well, he’s quickly losing my support. I think it was to please the far-end of the Republican spectrum, or to appeal to those who liked Hillary and feel disowned by the Democratic party for picking Obama over her (lots of Hillary supporters are not supporters of him). Having Biden behind Obama makes him a bit more secure, but I agree, Obama still has his own skeletons.

The biggest thing to remember: Congress is becoming ever-increasingly more powerful these days, especially since Bush’s approval has fallen off a cliff. They pass the legislation, they can override the President, they take care of the day to day business that is really starting to affect the common American (aka, economy crisis, education, housing, etc). Their election should not be taken lightly.

You know Cav, I can’t help but note that you appear to be much more comfortable about making an an obvious, derogatory reference to Sarah Palin, in a mean spirited sort of way, come on, “knuckle draggler”? However, when you venture into Obama-land, your criticism rises to a different level; it’s still derogatory, but absent the comedy and mocking physical image you paint of Governor Palin. I see a white woman being treated very differently than a man of color, not just in some of your comments, but during this entire election cycle. It’s a respect issue.

No offense, powderpuff, but Paulin just comes off as a crazy lady. However, I don’t think it’s necessarily just because she’s a woman. I agree, the negative press that she and Hillary have received is out of line. But her falter with her husband, daughter, and such, just brings up an image of bad housewife. It’s easier to find this kind of stuff, as race is too touchy of a subject. It’s dumb, I agree. But people bash women left and right…racial bashing is reserved for extremists today. That and you don’t see Obama hanging out with a black-version of the KKK…it’s just not kosher.

Dude, commercial for Bill Maher on HBO:
“I don’t know why people don’t laugh at black jokes over Obama. You’re just cracking at a group of people. It’s like when I laugh at Bush jokes, I’m taking a swipe at all ■■■■■■■■ people”

Like I said, race is just one of those subjects it’s not PC to laugh about. Dunno why. Can’t tell you how many kitchen jokes I get.

In a time of economic crisis, war, etc. McCain or Clinton have the experience to lead the country. But, Palin scares me way too much. There are many people who strongly favored McCain, myself included, that have been alienated by McCain in his choice of Palin.

To add: Bill Maher is always funny!

Fear not, powderpuff. I consider Barry to be as much of a fraud as anyone. You’re right re: insults that are politically correct to be aimed at these people, but it doesn’t change the fact that they are shameless, self-serving swindlers who can only succeed and persist in a BS field like american politics. Or politics in general. XX or XY, black or white, Palin is unqualified for any sort of significant leadership position. Not only does she lack meaningful educational and work experience, but she is clearly outmatched intellectually by nearly every public figure I’ve ever seen. Every one of my friends is sharper and more worldly than she apparently is. And not only that, but her arrogant and defiant demeanor are incredibly frustrating to understand. None of the other three major party presidential/vice presidential candidates so clearly lack any sort of higher reasoning ability. And I’m not just saying that because she’s a woman - I certainly wouldn’t say it about Hilary (despite the fact that she flunked one of the easiest bar exams in the country after graduating from YLS).

And here I am wondering when it will be good to spend the 590 dollars required to naturalise…

I think the media is responsible for Sarah Palin’s image. They bashed Hilary and now they are doing it to Sarah.

At least these woman can point to specific accomplishments. Obama doesn’t seem to be able to lay claim to any achievements.

Palin understands the energy business better than just about anyone and took on the oil industry in Alaska forcing them to pay royalties on their profits and then giving tax payers in Alaska the money in the form of tax rebates.

She balanced the buget, lowered property taxes, has a surplus budget. She keeps the state checkbook on line so citizens can see what is happening. She employed this same approach on the natural gas pipeline to the lower 48 states. She held open door sessions, and refused to allow backdoor/closed door deals to occur and in under two years they began installing the infrastructure for the natural gas pipeline. The only people who should find Palin scarey are those dopes we have in congress who never pass a law that isn’t filled with ear mark pork.

Obama on the other hand has spent his short time in the Senate writing two books and running for president. I think at last count he has been present in the Senate for 142 days. That is not a lot of experience.

Obama wants to hid the affiliations that show him in a bad light like the LA Times video where he is praising Arafats surrogate. Why doesn’t he want anyone to see the Praise he heaped on a card carrying member of the PLO???

Palin found people, in her own party, doing bad things and she threw them under the bus.

I don’t know why you call Palin a knuckle dragger and not Obama who writes words of praise for a guy like Bill Ayres, an admitted terrorist who has killed Americans. Obama is a guy who let his children attend a church (their entire lives) that was filled with hate speach about America. A guy who let a convicted felon Tony Rezko help buy a house he couldnt afford.

Sure Obama paid Rezko back…with a $14 million land deal he secured for Rezko.

As I said, just voting for the one who has demonstrated honor. Doesn’t seem like too much to ask.

Just my 2 cents.

Perhaps Palin … is just not a good speaker/debater. For one, for all the executive “experience” she has, she’s not very good at elaborating how exactly that gives her competency.

Well, it’s funny you should bring that up. During the VP debates Biden made 14 factual errors and all the media talked about was Palin mispronouncing a name of a General.

I think Biden’s statement that the U.S teamed up with France to fight Hezbollah in Lebanon was a bit more newsworthy.

I think Palin got hurt with Charlie Gibson’s interview. He tossed softball questions at Biden and tried to trip up Palin. I want the truth about candidates so I can make an informed decision.
