electrical and computer engineering, or computer science

Hi all. I'm really interested in electronics and computers. I'm applying to a lot of top name schools that have respectable engineering and computer science programs. However, I'm stuck in a bit of a rut. Carnegie Melon, for instance, requires that I apply to either the engineering institute or the school of computer science. I've always loved programming, and computer science is something that I have a genuine passion for. However, I often find that I would prefer to do a little more "hands on" work with electronics. I'm becoming especially interested in this through my digital electronics class. Basically I'm asking if anyone has any input on comparing Electrical/Computer Engineering with Computer Science. Thanks!

When I applied last year, you could apply to both the Computer Science school AND the Engineering institute. You'll just have to choose between the two if you're accepted.

At Carnegie Mellon you can study ECE with a "Software Engineering track." This has a lot of overlap with CS and even allows you to double major ECE with CS (which is one thing I may do).
