Electrical Eng grad schools help - average student

Im looking into some graduate schools (EE) for next fall. I was wondering if anyone could add some schools onto my list based on my stats:

GPA: 2.99
GRE: 1170 (450 V, 720 Q)
Currently working in a research lab on campus for a professor. (1 yr exp)
Published in a research paper. (1 paper)
Professors are willing to write good letters of rec.

U Michigan - Dearborn (MS Automotive Eng)
Kettering U (MS Automotive Eng)
Clemson U (MS Automotive Eng)
University of South Florida (EE)
University of Miami (EE)
Penn State (EE)

Im located in PA but schools can be nearly anywhere in the country. I want to apply for a MS in EE, more geared towards Control Systems.
Thanks!

I can’t add schools to your list but I suspect that PSU and UMich will be reach schools for you. I know that PSU EE really wants to see a 3.2 gpa, and I think Michigan will be similar. Not sure about the rest.

Your Gpa is the mininum set by Universities to take you in consideration for admission. Your Gre Quant is low: you need to push your app from a different side than your Gpa, so a 780-800 would be appreciated. And if you’re american (and you don’t need to take TOEFL) your Verbal must be at least over 500.
Anyway as cosmicfish said, UMich and PSU are a high reach for you, I think you have a good chance at USF, I don’t know about other universities.

I don’t know anything about EE and control systems, but have you looked at Lehigh?

[Alfred University - Inamori School of Engineering - Electrical Engineering Graduate Programs](http://engineering.alfred.edu/grad/ee/)

Alfred has EE in their Master’s Programs, it may be a reach, but you are in PA? Drive up & check it out. As a Regional University they have a few Master Degree programs.

Im located in Philadelphia. I havent looked into Lehigh, from what I hear they are pretty competitive. I know my application is not very strong, not much I can really do about it at this point i guess :frowning: But I was told if I can get strong references and a good statement of purpose, it could help out. Here are some other schools im looking into:

University of Central Florida
Poly-Tech Institute NY
Rochester Institute of Tech NY
George Mason

I have heard some negatives about polytech. Have you looked at stevens institute of Technology or SUNY stony Brook since you are looking to come up this ways. I know stony brook is a state school but can’t be more then Poly-tech in tuition. I actually heard that its a much better school. I myself am planing to go to City college in Manhattan since I work in manhattan.

From the Lehigh ECE site for graduate admissions, lists of required/preferred prereqs for admission:

OP is referring to UMich Dearborn, not Ann Arbor. Dearborn is much easier to get in to and is not considered one of the top engineering schools. Think in terms of UC Berkeley vs one of the weaker UC schools. There is also another UMich school, Flint.

Can anyone recommend me any schools in Cali that I would have a chance of getting into?
Thanks

You could try some of the Cal State Universities for MS programs.

SoCal: Cal State LA, CSUN, Cal Poly SLO
Silicon Valley: San Jose State and San Francisco State

The UCs usually have a 3.0 GPA requirement, but you could try some of the “lower tier” schools.
