Hello,
I'm having trouble deciding in between these two majors.
Background:
- 25 years old.
- I've been working for 4 years as a Project Manager for a construction company. (We've done work in many colleges such as UCSD or UCSB, I started as an estimator)
- Fluent in English, Spanish, and Farsi.
- I will be applying to colleges as a transfer student this Fall.
Personally I don't like one more than the other. It seems that Electrical Engineers are better paid. However, I have no experience in the field. Will my experience as a PM be worth anything if I go for EE? Is any of these fields better for a person that will graduate at 28 instead of 23?
Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I would recommend Civil Engineering, given that you have experience in the area. Whatever pay advantage EE may have will be far less advantage than 4 years worth of previous experience in the field.

You really need to decide for yourself which one of the two will most interesting to you. Look into them both. Clearly you know more about Civil Engineering but you need to learn more a bout Electrical Engineering before you make a decision.

How did you get a job as a project manager without a college degree?

Thank you for the replies. To answer your question I didn’t get hired as a project manager from the start. I started as an estimator and eventually became a PM as I started taking more responsibilities.

Sounds like you are a guy with initiative. 25 is young and in the grand scale of things 4 years is a lot of time, but still a minute part of what will comprise your career. I’m sure a lot of things you learned in your time as PM would be transferable in both EE and Civ. You’ll probably do well in both so the real question is, which one interests you most?
