Electrical Engineering

What is the best engineering major that is desperately needed give the economic climate? I want to study Electrical Engineering in College, but I"m unsure how to show my interest by means of my EC activities and volunteer work. How should I show the admissions committee that I"m really interested? I have the same questions for Aerospace Engineering and would appreciate any feedback about this.

Civil engineering is huge thanks to crumbling infrastructure.

Pretty much any engineering discipline is going to be in high demand at any economic climate. But (assuming you’re a rising HS senior/college freshman) we hopefully won’t be in the recession in 4 years… unless it’s another Great Depression. Bank on the former, and choose whichever you prefer, which seems to be EE, and study that.

If that’s how you’re picking your major, you’re unlikely to see it thru to the degree. Engineering programs are pretty tough, and people quickly drop by the wayside that aren’t dedicated to getting into the career. Spend some time talking to engineers, reading about what various types do, and pick the one that you find interesting enough to really want to do.

Hmm… Thanks for the advice. I think I might talk with some engineers about my major. Any advice on what EC’s to do?

you could try volunteering for engineers without borders. Its pretty cool and lots of fun.

really? How would I do so? I visited the site, but it didn’t mention anything about how to join a chapter or help out.

At the same time, so many students switch majors or apply undeclared that admissions counselors aren’t usually looking at your declared major, unless you are getting admitted into a certain school within a university. For engineering, I would recommend good grades in math and science and maybe some activity in a science or engineering club. Because of the nature of engineering design and research, not too many high schoolers are very involved in “engineering activities.” I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

EWB is worth checking out, though!

I want to do Electrical Engineering, but I"m not really sure I’ll like it. At the same time, I don’t want to just take it and drop out or something. How do I see if I"ll like it?

The BLS OOH contains a wealth of information on job projections and salary potentials. It has the benefit of using lots of sources and compiled by professionals. If you need help finding it or using it, let me know.
