Electrical or Computer Engineering

I plan on choosing between one of these two majors come next year. I find both fields interesting but had some questions.

Which major would there would be a larger demand for the job market in 10 years?

Is one considered more difficult/prestigious than the other?

Also, does majoring in only either EE or CE limit you from job opportunities or do employers see them as the same thing?

Thanks

Choosing which major shouldn't be based on your questions, but what YOU really love doing.

Well, the obvious question is whether you like computers. If you really love computers, you would choose CS. If you really hated computers, you would choose EE. That you list EE and CE probably means that you're leaning more towards the EE side; so go with EE and maybe get a minor/concentration in computer related courses. That's my two cents. And don't worry about marketability... it's all engineering, baby.

There are a lot of overlaps between these two, and u can change your major from EE to CompE very easily. I think you should choose EE, because it has so many specialities within it, you can see what you like. I see that EE deals with hardware, while CE deals with both hardware and software and CS with software.

There are a ton of overlapping courses for the three majors (EE/CE/CS) so switching in between isn't that bad. However, at least at my school.. people "drop" to EE since it's "easier".

Do what you want.. that's most important.

That being said, EE is mostly hardware, with some exposure to digital systems and a small amount of programming.. that's it.

CS is pretty much all programming, with no exposure to EE (at least in our school.)

CE is just the mid point where you get a piece of everything. Up to electronics, up to operating systems, and up to microprocessor-based digital.

Well between the three (EE/CE/CS) which one would you say is easier to get into at a school like say UIUC? Or are they equally difficult to get into?

It depends. If you want to work in radar/sonar/DSP, then EE is your choice. If you want to work on computer architecture/OS design, then CE might be a better choice.

If you do either, you'll still be marketable and you'll still be expected to be smart enough to pick up another field (even if EEs dominate in it).

I didn't mean it that way. I meant like, when I'm applying for admission, which one is less competitive?

It shouldn't be any harder/easier for either of the two. Both programs share great similarities, so I don't see why they would have different criteria for admitting students

Very few schools admit students by specific engineering majors.
