Electrical vs. Mechanical Engineering

Hello, I am currently looking into the EE and ME majors and am very interested in the robotics & mechatronics fields.

I am currently enrolled as an EE student at the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. However, as the semester has progressed, I have neither enjoyed nor have been very successful in my major. In previous semesters, I have done very well in my math and physics disciplined courses and have found them interesting. Despite spending countless hours preparing for my EE courses, I have struggled in these classes and have found myself very unhappy.

Therefore, I am seriously considering transferring from EE to ME, partially due to my interest in physics & math as well as the two fields. Would EE or ME better provide a better foundation for my fields of interest, would others recommend me to go ahead and transfer to ME? Any input or guidance regarding my situation is greatly appreciated.

In physics, did you like mechanics, fluids, and thermodynamics?

Mechanics, thermodynamics, kinematics, yes. I think a big part of it is I prefer more hands-on, tangible science. Something that I can relate to and physically understand, rather than EE with involves largely abstract concepts.

Fluids I wasn’t too crazy about, but I did just fine when it came to comprehension of them on past courses/exams.
