Electronics

Basically, music gets me through my day, everyday. I haven’t really had the opportunity or the forum to ask about it before, so I suppose here would be a good place. I know that cell phones and such are not allowed during BCT, but if electronics such as cell phones, iPods, laptops are allowed, when will that be, if at all?

well lemme see what i can muster from all the stuff i've heard. cell phones we can get after prog (mid semester, early october?).. every squadron is different and may let you have them on the weekends starting w/ parents weekend. music isnt allowed until after recognition, beginning of march.. and we get issued laptops :)

That's cool... what kind of laptops?

Nobody's sure yet, but it will be similar to 2011's. The got Fujitsu model T4220 tablet computers.

The cell phone policy is typically:

BCT-PW: No cell phones
PW-Prog: Cell phones on weekends
Prog onward: Cell phones all the time

Quickly learn how to get through the day without music. You will not have it for 9 months (to include movies and video games too minus trips to the movie theaters.)

music was one of the hardest things for me. basically it came down to me having roomates who liked it to and we'd sing random songs every once in a while. i also did choirs so i still had music at least 4 days a week.

diddo. I have difficulty studying if I don't have music. I made it through by just concentrating more. Plus, I was given access to Russian music, since I was enrolled in Russian last semester and part of this semester. That helped when I was up late working on school.

One thing you will learn though is that not everyone follows the media rules (as hornet and eagle can also tell you).

Oh, and if they do it again this Fall, there will be movies in Arnold hall on the huge projector screen in the presentation room (same room ya'll will be in for 6 hours during Orientation). I went almost every Friday and Saturday nights (that's when they're played) to watch them.

Or just buy headphones. I'd say roughly 90% of the freshmen in my squad got music on their computer after thanksgiving break.

what happens if you caught with music when you are not allowed to have it?

varies from squad. any where from a slap on the wrist and "don't let me catch you again" or "i don't care" to 30/30/y, which is 30 demerits, 30 confinements (2 hours each on weekends sitting at your desk in service dress and studying or doing hw), and you are restricted until they are all served. depends on your squadron and who catches you. whether or not that chance is worth it is up to you.

i don't believe for a second that anyone this entire year received a 30/30/y for listening to music

ok, maybe a little high on the #, but i know large punishments have been handed out for things like music, especially when its not the first offense

5/5/y is more common.

i would tend to say a 20/10/y

:)

Depends on the squad. I got a 5/5/Y when I got caught watching Lost, but then again it was the first weekend after Acceptance day (yeah, pretty stupid I know), so they may have been going easier on me. Some guys in my squad got caught with a bunch of stuff last semester and got 20 confinements (not sure if they were 20/20/Y's) though, so eagle's about right.

Bottom line: Don't do stuff if you're told not to, unless you are willing to take the punishment and loose some respect! Headphones may be the easy way out, but if you stick through to the end like some of us have (I learned from my mistake), post-Recognition will be that much sweeter for you (others will disagree with me though). Just wait till Fall semester starts and your squad tells you the rules though. Then you'll know what you can and can't do.

Generally, it is wise to avoid breaking that rule. In my old squad, the exception was people stuck here on the weekend. SOME upperclassmen will have a bit of mercy if it is 10PM on a Saturday night.

lol what if it's the weekend and you ask your little sister to play music into the phone for a couple hours?
;)
jk

^^If you ever reach that point of desperation missmuff, haha I wont ever let you live it down... ;)

missmuff,

Maybe you could get one of those toothbrushes that play music! My little D has Hannah Montana and she brushes 10 times a day!
...not that you like Miley Cyrus...LOL!!! :)
