elem education: no jobs

Hi there. I'm an elementary teacher, or trying to be. I'm writing here to tell everyone: don't bother getting a degree in this field. There aren't any jobs. And, if you will "try" to take on some assignment as a foot-in-the-door (sub, assistant, private school), forget the pay. You'd be better off as a secretary somewhere. Even if you totally lucky (and you're super attractive), the eventual pay will still barely get past the starting salaries of most other jobs.

Years ago, all the news was all about a pending shortage. It never happened. All the folks expected to retire, never retired. All the teachers who had kids stayed on too.

So I started this thread to hear from other out-of-work teachers. Or, if you are teaching, tell me something: are you young and blonde? pls reply!

This is from my school’s counseling site:
“Teachers do NOT Major in Education: Prospective teachers major in an academic subject or group of subjects, while at the same time taking special courses related to educational topics. Interested students should contact the Teacher Education Program office regarding prerequisites to the Graduate program.”

Young blonde teachers are the only good teachers

It’s rare, but I agree with the above poster.

In a few years districts will start to hire in abundant numbers. This will happen because many municipalities had to fire/not rehire existing teachers due to budget cuts, and down the line when the economy improves schools will be looking to hire as many, or more, teachers than they had before the recession.
