Eligibility Index Confusion

So I looked over the 2017 EI Requirements (http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/) for SJSU in Computer Science, it is 4500. However, in 2015 the EI Requirement (http://info.sjsu.edu/static/admission/frosh-f2015impact.html) for Computer Science was 4300. Here’s my problem, in 2015 they used the old SAT (2400 scale) and in March 2016, they changed the SAT to a 1600 scale. I am not sure if the 2017 EI Requirements use the old (2400 Scale) or new (1600 Scale) SAT. I took the new SAT (1600 Scale) and got a 1170 on it. Please help me understand this! Thanks!

Cal States only use the 1600 scale for the old and New SAT since they only focus on the Math and English sections. The essay section is not included in the Eligibility index calculation.

Also EI’s can fluctuate from year to year by as much as 200 points depending upon the stats of each in-coming Freshman class. Use last years EI to gauge your chances. Apply for CS if are within the 100-200 range since it could be lower this year or consider applying to Software Engineering instead.

I would also like to add the SJSU starting using a modified eligibility index for Engineering/CS majors. Here is the calculation:

Calculating the Impaction Index for College of Engineering programs
Beginning Fall 2017, applicants to programs in the College of Engineering (COE) will be ranked based on a modified Eligibility Index giving greater weight to the math sections of the SAT and ACT.

  1. To calculcate the COE impaction index, you will need to calculate a total SAT score (math and EBRW) in the following way:

a. For SAT scores from a test date after March 1, 2016:

[(SAT Math * 3) + (EBRW)]/2 = COE total SAT score

b. For SAT scores from a test date prior to March 1, 2016:

[(SAT Math * 3) + (Critical Reading)]/2 = COE total “old” SAT score - this scores will need to be concorded from the old total SAT to the redesigned SAT total using concordance tables

c. For ACT scores:

[(MATH * 3) + (the average of SCIE,ENGL,READ)]/4 = COE ACT comp score - this score will have to be concorded to the redesigned SAT total using concordance tables

  1. Once you have a total SAT score from step 1 above, put that total SAT score in to the CSU eligibility index equation to calculate the COE impaction index for SJSU:

[SAT Score Total + (GPA * 800)] = COE impaction index

with an 1170 SAT, you’ll need a CSU GPA above 4 to be competitive for CS at SJSU. I am not knocking the program - it is excellent and located in the silicon valley - but, most people change their major at least once, meaning, you are likely to be studying something else after a year or two - and the school isn’t as great in many other fields. With those stats, there are many other options with a more balanced reputation. But, that’s just one man’s opinion.

What’s your CSU GPA GPA?

@NCalRent, OP stated on another thread that their CSU GPA was in the 3.6-3.7 range. Also that their EI was in the 4100-4200 range even using the modified EI for SJSU Engineering. Suggestions were made to consider Software Engineering or Computer Engineering as a possible major instead of CS.

@Gumbymom and @NCalRent, please tell me that both of you will still be posting around here when my daughter applies to college in two years. You are fonts (and/or founts) of information. Thank you.

@AMCdad, yes I will continue to post on CC as long as I think I can contribute any helpful information.

Awesome. Much appreciated.
