Elimination of Cal Grant Program?!

it sucks, I received the same email last night…

[Legislative Action](http://capwiz.com/nacac/issues/alert/?alertid=13464096)

Guys check out this link!!! This is probably the easiest way to send your complain about the cal grant issue. I found this from Mrs. Sun’s website and I thought I should share this with everyone since the issue affects virtually all of us :(

Hi! I read your comment on the thread about Cal Grants. I’m down to help you in any way I can. I’m a UCSD student and I’ll lose 9k if this goes through.

saveCalGrants:

Are you aware that if you already have a Cal Grant, they’re not cutting it off?

KG,

so are you suggesting that since this wouldn’t affect him, he should take his money and run? or join the good fight and help his fellow college students?

Well, I said it would affect virtually everyone because once government closes Cal Grant UC’s will have to recalculate every student’s Scholarship Recognition Award to cover up the financial shortage. So even if you are eligible for Cal Grant this year, your Scholarship Recognition Award might get decreased for this reason. Then you’d still end up getting less money than you’d have got with Cal Grant program.

This is my understanding and might be incorrect but my instinct tells me I’d be better off if Cal Grant program continues to operate lol! Ah but it really sucks that California is having this financial disaster!

theydidntnameme: No, I’m not suggesting that. But if he were to take either side, I would recommend that he become more familiar with the situation. Even if he stood to lose money, I do suggest that he shouldn’t be motivated by what he stands to no longer receive from the government, but instead by how the money of the people will be most effectively spent.

Democracy is a delicate balance, all. We’ve got personal entitlements on the one side and collectivism on the other, and we’ve got to find the right combination. We’ll never find that out of blind appeals to any idealogy, and it certainly won’t sift out of short sighted self interest.

Eh, I didn’t quite capture what I meant with personal entitlements vs. collectivism. But the point stands about having to balance many interests, and with limited resources. Finding where that balance stands comes out of careful analysis, as humans are well built to be short sighted and self-interested while poorly equipped to understand large amounts of data.

I understand that we are in the midst of a financial crisis so cutting education fund for emergency usage is acceptable. However, complete elimination of Cal Grant is somehow against people’s will in long term and it’d eventually hurt the society because no one would like to live with people of low educational levels and it also implies that we would have less competitiveness compared with other countries if we stop investing in education.

So, I guess reducing the budget of Cal Grant is O.K. since it’s been said that Cal Grant IS too generous. But killing the program. No way!

I was told today by a fin aid counseler at UCSD that the proposed elimination of cal grant wouldn’t apply to transfer students since they aren’t new students. Freshman are the ones who wouldn’t get grant money. She said worst case is a reduction of $600 for transfers. Can anyone verify this?

what about someone like me, who will be a transfer student in the fall, but never applied for cal grants while at ccc (until now ?)

I never got any grants before and they said I’m still was a CA student so I’m considered returning and therefore would still get the grant
