ok this is a rumor going around campus that due to budget cuts the university might be forced to eliminate summer semester..again this is a RUMOR being circulated by students and as soon as i heard that i felt upset because i really thought that summer term was a very good thing for the school especially for freshman and helps retention of students... Anyone hear anything along these lines.

That does not make any sense since some students have been accepted for Summer 2008 already and the state requires students to attend at least one Summer unless you have 9 credits through acceleration methods like AP/IB/CLEP. Also, the Bright Futures Scholarship does not cover Summer so the state does not have to pay for the credits taken in the Summer.

I will be totally shocked if your rumor is true.

same here...what i thought was maybe a reduction of summer a and b, but consider it almost impossible for them to get rid of c

Well, it won't happen for Summer 2008. Maybe changes for Summer 2009 and forward. I also doubt that they will "do away" with summer. If I remember rright, I believe that the state doesn't actually pay for summer expenses, they are taken out of what is calculated for fall and spring. So maybe it is one of these "stands" that the university wants to take, or a point they want to make that if the legislature will not "fund" summer, they might have to do away with it.

The housing site says "The online housing agreement for Summer 2008 will become available on February 8th , 2008". It is true that there is no mention of Summer 2008 under the registration windows. The Fall 2008 registration windows says it will be available on February 28, 2008. I also see on the FSU web site them accepting applications for the Summer 2008 international programs and the Summer 2008 Serviceship program.

I guess we can call the registrar and see if they will tell us if summer session is being scaled back.

I called the registrar office and they seem to think Summer 2008 semester is business as usual.

disturbing article about florida's fiscal situation and the spillover to the university system. maybe this explains the rumor

No summer school at UF? - News - GainesvilleSun.com

i guess that this is where the rumor is coming from, i guess fsu summer is safe for atleast one more summer thanks cybermom. but who knows about about the following years.

I am still waiting to see the Summer 2008 registration bulletin and courses before I would feel confident all is really "business as usual".

I also wonder if enrollment for the last two FSU 2008-2009 admission windows will be significantly impacted by the cost cutting.

I feel like thats almost guaranteed that as a whole admission numbers would be down.

on a related note with budget cuts, it seems as if the amount of classes was reduced for spring semester and professors forced to have larger classes, two examples in my English and multicultural film both of my professors were a bit upset and said that they had never taught classes this big and that due to budget cuts everyone should start getting used to it.

One class in specific that was weird was urp3000, or introduction to urban planning i was hoping to take that class and when the bulletin came out it stated that there would 2 sections of 40 students, but when registration came around it was reduced to one section of 65 students in bellamy, by the end of this week the class was changed again to one section 89 students in sandals, very weird. And no seats are available.

My son loves his classes and he got a good schedule lucky for him but he does have one really large marketing class with 497 students. He does have two classes with only 20 and 38 students too and the others are pretty large around 100 students each.

My Creative Strategy instructor is simultaneously teaching another class at the same time as mine. Well not literally, but he divides his TA's up into two sections and he observes both classes equally.

my s has been accepted and will be attending summer c. having read coments from current cc students and talking with students inc tour guide when we visited last summer seems like a wonderful way to get into the swing of things. we are all so thrilled to be a new nole family.

Many FTIC students regret waiting until Fall to start attendance because half way through the summer a lot of your high school friends are gone and you get anxious waiting to start your new adventure. Summer session is a great way to acclimate into college with less pressure and less crowds. It is also nice to be able to complete courses and gain credits in a shorter term.

i agree i love summer so much i'm doing it again...
