Elimination Time..

so i have 11 and i dont want that many!!! but i dont know which i should get rid of because i like all of them! heres the list (in order of difficulty, as i perceive them):

stanford
dartmouth
brown
pomona
amherst
williams
bowdoin
notre dame
colgate
richmond
villanova

what i want in a college: tolerance, athletic, outdoorsy, small-mediumish, not too much partying, safe location, friendly student body, good dorms/food, etc.
i want to major in science, im from new york, im a girl, 2280 sat, i do track and tennis, decent awards and other extracurriculars that i dont feel like listing out...

so which should i get rid of???

You’re about to go into college. Learn to do things yourself.
Thoroughly research each school and eliminate which one does not fit your personality and what you’re looking for.

Future reference: http://youniversitytv.com/youlife/cvt.php#vidid=3663

like i havent already been researching.
as i said i like all of them, and even if they do have some flaws, i obviously like other aspects that outweigh the negativity. i’m just trying to get other people’s opinions because i think they can be more valuable than all those college guidebooks and whatnot.

sooo does anybody have any suggestions? please??

Outliers on the list:

Villanova and Notre Dame for being Catholic. Have you looked into this aspect of these schools and are you comfortable with it?

Stanford and Pomona for being on the West Coast when most of your schools are on the East. If you live on the East Coast, have you talked to your parents about going so far away and have you considered the costs of not only flying to and from college but also either shipping most of your stuff there and back or finding a place to store it in the summer?

Brown (and maybe Richmond, don’t really know anything about it) for being urban. Have you visited it or another urban school to see if you like it? Most of your other schools are quite rural, which will certainly help to foster the outdoorsy and athletic feel you want.

That being said, you have plenty of reaches but you sound qualified for them and they do sound like a good fit for you for the most part. I’d say you can knock off 1-2 and have a very good list. Best of luck!

Maybe you should consider eliminating Colgate – it’s got a huge party scene

the catholic aspect of those schools is a bit of a turnoff, but i like everything else about notre dame so i’ll keep that one. but villanova i don’t really like, im just keeping it as a safety. :(.

as for the west coast schools, stanford is amaaaazing haha and my parents dont mind the distance. but pomona i’m just concerned about the smog from LA…any thoughts?

and brown’s urbanity does bother me a little bit, but the open curriculum (and other stuff) is such a plus that i could deal with the surroundings. and i haven’t visited richmond but that’s another safety so i’m just keeping it

aaaaand colgate! ok so colgate is like a low-match/safety for me and its campus is really pretty sooo it stays on the list hahah

thanks for all the suggestions!!

So you’re pretty set on keeping everything on your list from Notre Dame down because they’re more matches/safeties? Okay.

Then choose two of Amherst, Williams, and Bowdoin. Maybe choose between Stanford and Pomona. Again, I think it’s fine to apply to 11 as long as you have safeties and matches and are qualified for your reaches, which I think is the case here, so I think you can just drop 1-2 and be absolutely fine. But if you really can’t choose between your reaches, you can apply to all of them.

How many safeties do you need? It seems like you’re just coming up with excuses NOT to get rid of schools when you say you want to… You just said you were keeping all 6 schools the previous poster mentioned.

With reasons like this, it’s easy to see why you’re having trouble getting rid of schools.

yeah i know it sounds stupid of me to reject your suggestions, but i just dont want to put myself in a situation where i only have one safety school and then it may reject me for some odd reason and then i have a big problem in case i dont get into any reaches.

and teeenage_cliche: i will try to choose between pomona/stanford and amherst/bowdoin/williams, they are pretty similar! haha

i got rid of villanova at least!

You need to do more research. Right now. Seriously. Comments like the following are disturbing:

The idea of a safety school is somewhere that you want to attend where you are a sure admit. How exactly did you make this list to begin with?

No one can make any reasonable suggestions unless they have some idea of your GPA/rank and course rigor.

Your list looks fairly reasonable to me. WHen you are applying to a bunch of highly selective schools, there’s nothing wrong with a list of 11 IMHO. Admission to small schools like Williams and Amherst is particularly difficult to predict.

Like the above poster. 11 is not a lot when a lot of your schools have low acceptance rates and the predictability of an acceptance/rejection is not clear.

What state are you located in? A state flagship might be your match safety.

I also don’t see a problem with applying to similar schools. Pomona and Stanford. Amherst/Williams/Brown. Afterall you have wants and these schools tend to fit those wants.
If you must eliminate schools, I’d do so from the list below. Maybe even Darthmouth(not too familiar with how it fits above other than it being liberal-art like)>
bowdoin
notre dame
colgate
richmond
villanova

Not to add to your list, but what about Rice? I personally would group it with Pomona and Stanford.

You should visit Richmond to see if you like it, because there’s no point of having it as a safety if you won’t want to go there. Just think about it this way, if that school was the only one you got into, would you be disappointed in going there? If so, don’t apply.

Eliminate Dartmouth - lots of partying.

Yeah, I agree with raelah. Dartmouth has a huge Greek life scene, and it’s isolated location means there’s not much to do but party. Also, I’m not sure how it stacks up in terms of “tolerance”, or what exactly you mean by that, but Dartmouth seems to be the most conservative and traditional Ivy, certainly a far cry from the openness you’d find at, say, Brown. I would also rethink your Catholic schools. I know you like them, save the religious aspect, but you can’t just eliminate that consideration from your search. At Notre Dame, Catholicism is huge. You may like other aspects but if they’re overrun by a religion you don’t particularly adhere to, the school isn’t a good fit. Just my .02.

to noimagination: i have this issue with “safety schools”… i dont want to attend any of them (sorry!) because i feel like i’ve worked so hard in high school and if i only get into a safety, then i will be disappointed no matter how nice the school is otherwise. but im trying to disregard that when i choose safeties, like richmond seems to be a really good fit for me in all other aspects.

consolation: gpa is 4.0 out of 4.0 unweighted, i have taken 4 ap’s so far and have gotten 4/5’s on all, this year im taking 5 more ap’s and all other courses have been honors. we don’t rank in my high school, but im estimating that i would be in the top 10%.

liek0806: im in new york, which is why i think colgate is more safe than it seems. and i like rice, except i dont want to go to texas, sorry

and to raelah and fearless: ive heard mixed reviews about dartmouth’s partying, and it does scare me a bit that its so centered on that aspect. but other than the partying, dartmouth would be my number one school for sure (besides brown, which is also amazing)…so i have to figure that out because i want to do ED to one of them most likely. eek!! and as for notre dame, i know it isnt an ideal match, so im looking into it right now, it may be eliminated in the near future…

thanks for the tips, everyone! :)

That means you are doing a bad job of choosing your safeties. There are so many schools in this country… stop worrying about prestige for a moment and just look at places that offer what you want.
