Swarthmore College President Rebecca Chopp announced today that Elizabeth Braun, currently dean of students at Mount Holyoke College, will be joining the Swarthmore community as its new dean of students, effective July 1, 2010.

I’m curious what this means for Garakai Campbell. I have no idea whether or not he was interested in the position. I would have to think that Swarthmore wants to keep him, if his desire is to continue on an administrative path. Perhaps he’s had discussions about a Provost track? I have no idea.

Speaking of recent hires, I don’t know if any of you have been listening to Rebecca Chopp’s Listening Tour events. She’s a real asset for Swarthmore.

I’ve been particularly impressed by two events she’s done with students recently. One was a Q&A session she did at a Class Awareness event, where she talked in very personal terms about being a first generation college student. I think the resonance with some of the students must have been strong:

I also am very impressed by her talk (and article) on the theological underpinnings of Martin Luther King, Jr’s work and the relevance to building a diverse community at Swarthmore. These strike me was very sophisticated remarks from college president at a MLK day event:
